Time to end this series with a look at what the Indians with their arbitration-eligibles, and review the roster that started the season in Cleveland.

The Indians had seven players eligible for arbitration last winter, which was a high number for an organization that tended to lock up players by the time they become eligible. This new tactic of being more selective with lock-up deals reduced the risk of having to pay a player who flamed out after a good start to his career, but at the same time meant that the Indians would be paying a higher salary per year for the players they kept on the roster.

Here's a short breakdown of the players who were eligible for arbitration, and the amount they eventually signed for.

OF Shin-Soo Choo (4.119 Service Time, 2nd Year)

2011 Salary: $3.975M (Arbitration)

2012 Salary: $4.9M

The Indians attempted to negotiate an extension, but Choo opted instead to go year-to-year, which is common practice for Scott Boras clients.

RHP Justin Masterson (3.108 Service Time, 1st Year)

2011 Salary: $468K (Renewal)

2012 Salary: $3.825M

Masterson got a big bump in salary, as is common for starting pitchers.

RHP Chris Perez (3.136 Service Time, 2nd Year)

2011 Salary: $2.225M (Arbitration)

2012 Salary: $4.5M

Closers are overvalued in arbitration more than any other position/role on the roster, Compare Perez's salary with the one Joe Smith received.

RHP Joe Smith (4.091 Service Time, 2nd Year)

2011 Salary: $870K (Arbitration)

2012 Salary: $1.75M

3B Jack Hannahan (3.065 Service Time, 1st Year)

2011 Salary: $500K (Renewal)

2012 Salary: $1.135M

This was Hannahan's first year eligible for arbitration, and he'd probably make more in 2012 than in his previous 11 seasons combined.

SS Asdrubal Cabrera (4.027 Service Time, 2nd Year)

2011 Salary: $2.025M (Arbitration)

Salaries Exchanged: $5.2M (Cabrera), $3.75M (Indians)

2012 Salary: $4.55M

Cabrera was one of two players that went as far as exchanging salaries with the Indians. But the Indians wouldn't actually go to arbitration with Cabrera, and later that spring, they'd extend him through the 2014 season (one season past free agency eligibility).

LHP Rafael Perez (4.027 Service Time, 3rd Year)

2011 Salary: $1.33M (Arbitration)

Salaries Exchanged: $2.4M (Perez), $1.6M (Indians)

2012 Salary: $2.005M

Because Perez had spent some time in the minors (therefore not accruing service time) after first becoming eligible for arbitration, he'll have a fourth arbitration-eligible season this winter before finally having enough service time to be eligible for free agency.

So here's what the Opening Day roster looked like, along with what those Opening Day players did in 2012 (Fangraphs WAR):

I included also the team positional rank in the AL; the ranking includes all players at that position, not just the player list. A player's WAR which was below 2.0 for a position player or starting pitcher or below .5 for a reliever is highlighted in red. Also, a league ranking below 9th was highlighted.

I placed an asterisk next to Choo's WAR because his number was very adversely affected by a brutal defensive number; if Choo's defensive numbers were around career norms, right field would have 3rd or 4th in the AL.

So based on the league rankings, the Indians ranked either at or towards the bottom of the league in 1B, 3B, LF, and DH production, in addition to 10th in relief pitching production (a good back end was dragged down by an awful front end) and 13th starting pitching production.

Conclusion

My main criticism of this offseason, given the constraints of the payroll and available players, boils down to a couple points:

There was no real backup plan if Grady Sizemore got hurt. Chris Antonetti seemed to realize this, given how hard he went after free agent outfielders even after re-signing Grady Sizemore, but couldn't either trade for or sign a starting outfielder. He banked on turning up some unexpected production from Shelley Duncan, Aaron Cunningham, and the boatload of minor-league free agents that were brought in, but he didn't get lucky there. In fact, the one area in which he did have some luck was when Michael Brantley blossomed into a solid starting center fielder, and stayed healthy the majority of the season. Had Brantley not developed, or had he gotten hurt, we could have seen a rotation of Aaron Cunningham and Ezequiel Carrera in center in addition to the black hole in left.

More hindsight than anything, but I'll throw it out there: there were starting pitcher upgrades available, but the Indians had already used up their major trade chips in acquiring Ubaldo Jimenez. This was a decision made prior to the end of the 2011 season, but still, it affected what Antonetti could do that winter. Both Gio Gonzalez and Trevor Cahill were dealt by Oakland last offseason, and a package including Drew Pomeranz and Alex White should have at least gotten the Indians into contention for those two players.

One thing Antonetti did accomplish with last winter's moves was to give the Indians a lot of payroll flexibility going into this offseason. The Indians once again will have just a few players under contract in 2013, and the few players that have guaranteed money coming their way in 2013 (Asdrubal Cabrera, Carlos Santana) they'd have no problems trading.

The issue, though, if whether Chris Antonetti is the right guy to be able to use this flexibility to start rebuilding this roster. We're probably going to have a roster turnover not seen in an offseason since after the 2001 campaign; when the Indians have previously done their tear downs, it came during the season, not after it.

Had the Indians had a strong farm system, they could have used that payroll flexibility combined with some key prospects to acquire a player via trade, or simply plugging those prospects into the various holes at the major-league level; now they're likely going to have to do that by trading major-league talent, essentially robbing Peter to pay Paul. That's on both Shapiro and Antonetti, but it looks like they'll have an opportunity to clean up their own mess, which isn't usually something a front office has the chance to do.

The Indians made several trades last winter, with a couple of them resulting in players that were on the 25-man roster. The first one of these came at the beginning of the offseason, and was the most significant as far as the 2012 season was concerned. It may turn out that the most significant trade in the long term happened towards the end of the winter.

As previously mentioned, the Indians had major needs in several areas, including the rotation, first base, and the outfield. The Indians would sign Casey Kotchman in free agency in the hopes that he'd plug the first base hole, but they'd attempt to fill the other positions via trade.

Before I begin, keep in mind that last winter the Indians' farm system was rated among the worst in baseball. They had dealt their two top pitching prospects (Drew Pomeranz and Alex White) to Colorado for Ubaldo Jimenez during the season, and they didn't really have any tradeable top prospects left; the only Cleveland prospect who made the various Top 100 lists that winter was Francisco Lindor. Lonnie Chisenhall probably also would have made the list, but he wasn't considered a rookie any longer. After Lindor, the quality dropped off considerably, with guys like Nick Hagadone and Chen Lee in the top 5; these guys will probably be good major-league relievers at some point, but relievers aren't nearly as valuable to a big-league club as position players or starting pitchers. So the Ubaldo Jimenez trade meant that Chris Antonetti didn't really have any big trading chips to use, unless he was willing to deal Francisco Lindor or Lonnie Chisenhall. The Indians probably had some interest in Gio Gonzalez and Trevor Cahill, both of whom were traded by Oakland last winter, but they couldn't match quality of prospects that Oakland would receive from Washington and Arizona respectively.

The strength of the farm system, such as it was, was very young position players (Lindor, Wolters, Luigi Rodriguez, Ronny Rodriguez) and high-level relievers (Hagadone, Barnes, Lee, Putnam), so it wasn't surprising to see the Indians deal from its strength in order to try to fill in some major-league holes.

10-31-2011: Traded LHP Chris Jones to the Atlanta Braves for RHP Derek Lowe

LGT Transactions (11-1-2011)

The Indians never pursued (as far as I know) a free agent starting pitcher, as they acquired two starters via trade.

This particular trade was a salary dump, pure and simple. Derek Lowe was coming off a horrible season, and was due to make $15M, so the Braves were looking to deal him to whoever would be willing on to take on the most salary, and given that any salary dumped could be spent on free agents, they wanted to move quickly.

Enter the Indians. They had a need for a starting pitcher, and when the Braves agreed to pay $10M of Lowe's $15M salary, they did the deal. Lowe at the very least could eat some innings, and $5M wasn't that much for a starting pitcher. They dealt LHP Chris Jones to the Braves, who was at the time a 22-year-old reliever who had just finished up the season at A+ Kinston. Jones could eventually turn into a LOOGY, but not much else; here's Baseball America's scouting report:

Jones has spent most of the past two seasons with high Class A Kinston working as a multi-inning reliever. While his strikeout (8.4) and walk (3.7) rates per nine innings are ordinary for an A-ball reliever, Jones has allowed only one home run to a lefty batter with Kinston the past two years, holding them to a .172 (27-for-157) average. His primary pitches are a high-80s fastball and a slurvy high-70s curveball, but he owes much of his success to a deceptive delivery that hides the ball from lefty batters.

11-26-2011: Traded IF Luis Valbuena to the Toronto Blue Jays for Cash

Valbuena was designated for assignment when the Indians added three players (Danny Salazar, Juan Diaz, Scott Barnes) to the 40-man roster in preparation for the Rule 5 Draft. Valbuena would be placed on waivers again the end of spring training, and he'd end up with the Chicago Cubs, playing mostly third base after making it back to the majors in June.

12-16-2011: Traded RHP Cory Burns to the San Diego Padres for OF Aaron Cunningham

Projected 2012 WAR (Fangraphs): 1.0

The other trade for a major-league player. After losing out on various free agent outfielders, the Indians elected to go the trade route. Cunningham was out of options, but had a decent minor-league history. He was ranked in Baseball America's Top 100 prospects before the 2009 season, but just hadn't been able to make the jump to the majors, struggling in short major-league stints from 2008-2011 with San Diego. The key factors in the Indians acquiring him was that Cunningham could play center field as well as bat right-handed. He would be the backup option in case Grady Sizemore got hurt or Michael Brantley struggled at the plate.

To get Cunningham, the Indians dove into its high-level minor-league relief depth again, trading RHP Cory Burns, who was coming off a very good season in Akron. He was the Aeros' closer in 2011, and finished up with 35 shiny saves. Burns owed more of his success due to a funky delivery than stuff, as you can see from Burns' major-league debut this year:

1-20-2012: Traded RHP Zach Putnam to the Colorado Rockies for RHP Kevin Slowey

LGT Transactions (1-21-2012)

Projected 2012 WAR (Fangraphs): 1.4

Of the three minor-league relievers traded last winter, IMO the best of the bunch was dealt a player that wouldn't pitch for the Indians in 2012. Kevin Slowey had been dealt earlier that winter from the Minnesota Twins, and the Indians, who had had their eye on Slowey for quite a while, almost immediately started asking about him after he landed with the Rockies. The Indians had just found out about Fausto Carmona's identity problems, and although they mentioned that they would have acquired Slowey regardless of whether Carmona was clear to enter the US or not, the news had to at least push them a bit in favor of making the trade.

Colorado would end up paying $1.25M of Slowey's $2.75M salary, so in exchange for that, the Indians sent the Rockies a better prospect than they otherwise would have. Zach Putnam was ranked fairly high as a prospect in the organization, and he'd spent some time in Cleveland the year before. His strikeout rates weren't what you'd expect of a reliever, but his repertoire led to a lot of ground balls. Putnam spent most of 2011 in Columbus, with a few appearances in Cleveland, and was on the cusp of making a major-league team. But the Indians, again, had some depth here, and used Putnam to help improve the depth at another position.

1-31-2012: Traded Cash to the Tampa Bay Rays for IF/OF Russ Canzler

LGT Transactions (1-31-2012)

The Indians had been looking all winter long for a corner bat who also hit right-handed, and finally at the end of the winter they acquired one. Well, sort of. Canzler had mashed at the AAA level the past two seasons, but he didn't really have a position (first base was his best position by default) and the strikeout rates in the minors combined to consign him in the minds of many organizations as a AAAA guy.

But, given the cost (undisclosed amount of cash) and the fact that the Indians still hadn't acquired a first baseman made the deal almost a no-brainer. The Indians would however sign Casey Kotchman, which pushed both LaPorta and Canzler to AAA, where both would spend most of the 2012 season.

2-21-2012: Traded LHP Kelvin De la Cruz to the Texas Rangers for Cash

This is here for completion's sake. Lord Kelvin would end up in the Detroit organization, and he'd spend all of 2012 in AA Erie.

So here's what the roster looked like after the trades and free agency:

I'll probably do one more segment, which will cover arbitration, and then call it a series.

After looking at what was available for the Indians, it was easy to see why most of their energies were spent looking at outfielders. Yes, the Indians needed a first baseman thanks to Matt LaPorta bombing out, but there just wasn't many good options out on the market. Yes, I know that both Albert Pujols and Prince Fielder were technically available, but the Indians had as much chance of signing either of them as me winning the lottery.

Here's last winter's first baseman crop. I was rather generous with the players included.

There's eight players listed here, but really the Indians had three options: Pena, Kotchman, and Overbay. Hawpe and Jackson were both damaged goods, and while the Indians certainly could have signed either one to a minor-league deal as a backup plan, they couldn't go into the season with either as the starter. Branyan I suppose might have worked, but again, only as a backup plan. And Pujols and Fielder were both going to get well over what the Indians had to spend.

The Indians actually offered Carlos Pena as much or more than he received from Tampa, but Pena wanted to go back to his former club. It turned out that this was not really a big loss. Lyle Overbay would sign with Arizona, the team he ended 2011 with, for $1.0M to serve as a backup to Paul Goldschmidt. That left Casey Kotchman, and with no first baseman on the trade market, it was just a matter of time before he and the Indians got together.

Kotchman was just a year older than Prince Fielder, and was coming off a career year, hitting .306/.378/.422. But there was a huge caveat to his season; the batting average of balls put in play by him was a ridiculously-high .335. Kotchman had always been a ground-ball hitter, and that hadn't changed in 2011, so it was very likely that 2012 would see a reversion to his career norms, and as a first baseman, those norms weren't that valuable. So the Indians signed him to a 1 year contract worth $3.0M, just about minimum wage for an everyday free agent.

In this case it's really hard to see even with hindsight where the Indians missed the boat. Here's the actuals from the group above.

A quick note on Pujols' salary: in 2012 the Angels are paying him $12.0M, but that will jump to $16.0M in 2013, then $23.0M in 2014, and slowly rise to $30.0M by 2021.

Fangraphs didn't like Kotchman's defense, which didn't help matters, but the real cause of his negative WAR was his offense, or lack thereof. Hitting .226/.282/.337 at any position is bad enough, but when you hit that at first base, the default sluggers' position, you're going to get -1.1 WAR. That's over 1 win less than replacement.

The alternative, Carlos Pena, would have cost the Indians $3.25 more to get just above replacement value. In the grand scheme of things, it's hard to work up much outrage on this one. But the reason the Indians had to choose between Kotchman and Pena was because Matt LaPorta didn't develop, and because there was no prospect coming up behind LaPorta that the Indians could have used.

Last time, we looked at what type of budget Chris Antonetti would have last winter, and estimated it at $16-18M, which would include both free agent signings and contracts taken on in trades.

Very early into the offseason, the Indians took on $5M of Derek Lowe's 2012 contract (which will be covered in a future installment). So that left $11-13M to cover at least one outfielder and a first baseman. That wasn't very much of a budget, especially since the Indians really needed at least two players: an everyday first baseman, and an everyday center or left fielder (Brantley would take the other position).

As mentioned in a previous segment, the Indians did have Shelley Duncan on the roster, and although he would probably be exposed as an everyday player, he did have some value as a part-time player. Duncan's projected WAR (Wins Above Replacement) for 2012 was projected at 1.3, which in Fangraphs' scale meant that he projected as a Role Player. The Indians would need to shoot for a player better than Duncan, and land him for $5M-6M, leaving room for a first base signing.

I combed through last year's available outfield free agents, and here's the free agent outfielders that projected at 1.0 WAR or greater:

I also included two available players with no previous MLB experience: Yoenis Cespdes, who had recently defected from Cuba and was an unrestricted free agent, and Norichika Aoki, who had been posted by his NPB team that winter; the Indians would have bid on him via a blind bidding system, and if they had won the bidding, would have exclusive negotiating rights. The Indians did seem to have some interest in Cespedes, but not in Aoki (or at least none that leaked out to the media).

Not included in this list were a couple players the Indians eventually signed to minor-league contracts: Ryan Spilborghs and Felix Pie. Neither would appear with the Indians in 2012, and neither would be in the organization by the end of the season.

There were five outfielders who projected to be in the Solid Starter or above range: Carlos Beltran, David DeJesus, Coco Crisp, Josh Willingham, and Michael Cuddyer. The Indians would show major interest in Beltran, Willingham, and Cuddyer, mainly because they were looking specifically for an outfielder who not only could hit for power, but break up the left-handers presently in the middle of the order.

But before any one of those outfielders signed with a club, the Indians re-signed Grady Sizemore, who had been out on the market for several weeks, to a one-year contract with incentives. The deal would pay Sizemore a base salary of $5M for 2012, as well as up to $4M in incentives. That shrunk the expected spending budget down to about $6-8M, but rather than drop the pursuit of Beltran et al for a first baseman, they continued to be mentioned as contenders for most of the top outfield free agents.

Beltran was probably never going to sign with the Indians, both due to money and (according to Chris Perez) fanbase concerns. Michael Cuddyer would sign with the Rockies, and it seemed that the Indians fell out of contention quickly on him. Probably the player the Indians were closest to signing was Josh Willingham; the price tag seemed in their ballpark, but he'd instead sign with the Twins for 3/$21M.

So the Indians would instead trade for Aaron Cunningham and be content to go to Spring Training with an outfield of Brantley-Sizemore-Choo, assume that Sizemore could stay healthy, sign a bunch of minor-league free agents, and try to patch together something in March.

So who ended up getting the best deal of the bunch? Here's the above chart with some 2012 actuals:

Keep in mind that WAR includes both offensive and defensive value, so although Willingham has been one of the better offensive players in the AL this season, he's also been among the worst defensive outfielders.

The Twins got the best player in Willingham (3.9 WAR) as well as decent $/WAR, but the Brewers got the best bang for their buck for Aoki*, who has hit well (108 OPS+) in addition to playing good defense. The Red Sox (Ross) and Reds (Ludwick) also made out very well. The Indians, of course, will get 0 WAR from Sizemore this season, and will likewise get zero return on the $5M.

*Note: this does not include the $2.5M posting fee the Brewers paid to Aoki's former NPB team.

Of the left fielders who did play for the Indians this season, here's what they did:

So not only did the Indians give up the 3.9 wins by not signing Willingham, they couldn't even manage to get replacement value out of their left fielders, spending roughly $2.2M (plus the split contract salary given Carrera) for that less-than-replacement value.

That the Indians didn't give Willingham that extra year (as has been rumored) is not the major cause of the Tribe's disastrous season, as they will finish the season much more than 4 wins out of the playoffs. But this was a major hole on the roster, and it was one of the areas in which Antonetti could have improved the team even given the team's financial constraints. If Grady Sizemore had been healthy, then there's a good chance the Indians come out ok in left, but everyone knew the risks associated with him; that's why Antonetti was pursuing Willingham and Beltran even after Sizemore re-signed.

Last time, we looked at the Indians' needs in the wake of declining Grady Sizemore's option. They would need to look outside the organization for a first baseman, left fielder, and at least one starting pitcher.

But, as every move in baseball eventually comes down to money, it's necessary to look at what kind of payroll Chris Antonetti would have to work with. How the Indians approached free agency would differ greatly from a team with a larger payroll; Prince Fielder would certainly fill the first base hole, but his 2012 salary alone would put the Indians over their eventual Opening Day payroll.

From a flexibility standpoint, the Indians were in very good shape, as even with Travis Hafner's $13.0M salary, the 2012 guaranteed contract only totaled $24.0M. But the Indians still had to fill out a 25-man roster, and they had seven players eligible for arbitration. By my calculations, if the Indians had kept their 25-man roster intact, their Opening Day payroll would be about $54.2M

Salary information source: Cot's Contracts

I used some hindsight, using the eventual arbitration salaries of the players that went that route. For Carlos Santana and Asdrubal Cabrera, who would eventually both sign long-term deals, I estimated their 2012 salaries if they hadn't signed the deals.

The major question was, as always, how much money the Indians front office would have to spend. This has been one of the sore points between the fanbase and ownership. Lately it's turned into chicken-or-egg arguments; the fanbase has generally said "I won't buy season tickets/come to the park" until ownership starts spending money, while the ownership behavior has generally been "We'll start spending when people start coming to the park," and hoping that the front office could put together a successful team on a relatively low payroll.

So even with a lot of player flexibility, it wasn't like Antonetti could get in on the bidding for the major free agents. In the best case scenario he'd have $16-18M to use to sign free agents or take on in trade salaries. That would take the Opening Day payroll to $72.0M, which would rank in bottom quarter of MLB clubs. And that $16-18M would likely have to be divided up two or three ways, so there wasn't much margin for error.

Last time, we looked at the Indians' needs at the end of last season. But before those could be addressed, Chris Antonetti had to make a couple option decisions.

Last time, we looked at the Indians' needs at the end of last season. But before those could be addressed, Chris Antonetti had to make a couple option decisions.

(note - the below scale originally used the B-Ref version of WAR - this has been changed to use the Fangraphs version.)

Quick WAR Chart (Fangraphs)

6.0+ MVP

5.0-5.9 Superstar

4.0-4.9 All-Star

3.0-3.9 Good Player

2.0-2.9 Solid Starter

1.0-1.9 Role Player

<1.0 Scrub Level

CF Grady Sizemore (Team Option $8.5M, $500K Buyout)- Declined (10-30-11)

Average WAR, 2009-2011: .63 (Scrub Level)

The issue here was health, and with Sizemore's latest knee surgery, that was more uncertain than ever. So the Indians declined his option; this meant that there were now 1.5-2 outfield holes, depending on how you felt about Michael Brantley, who had just finished his first full major-league season with a 1.6 WAR (2+ is considered starter level).

RHP Fausto Carmona (Team Option $7.0M, $0 Buyout + Arbitration) - Picked Up (10-31-11)

Average WAR, 2009-2011: 1.6 (Role Player)

The Carmona option was picked up for a couple reasons. First, his contract was such that by picking up this particular option, two other options (2013 and 2014) remained in place, so there was an incentive for the Indians to do it. Second, if the Indians had declined his option, Carmona would not have been eligible for free agency, so he would have gone to arbitration, and likely would have made just as much as the option. The Indians, if they really didn't want Carmona around, could have declined the option and non-tendered him a contract, but that would have opened up another hole in the rotation. If Carlos Carrasco had been healthy, they perhaps might have done this, but $7.0M isn't that expensive even for a bottom-of-the-rotation starter.

So after the option decisions were made, here's what the potential position players and rotation looked like:

I've highlighted the non-bench positions that were projected to be less-than-starter level, which in this case meant 1B, 3B, LF, CF, DH and two of the five starting pitchers (rounding up for Tomlin).

Hafner, if healthy, would probably outperform his projection, but he hadn't been healthy, so the Indians were going to need to fill at least a third of the potential DH at-bats in 2012. With Lonnie Chisenhall just about ready, you could get away with not upgrading third base. The Indians were banking on Carmona improving, but he needed to be at the bottom of the rotation, not in the middle of it.

For the rest of the spots (1B, LF, CF, 1 SP), the Indians had clear needs that couldn't be addressed internally.

Much of the problems associated with this season had their roots in what the team did last winter, and over the next couple of days, I'm going to cover what the Indians did and didn't do in the areas of (1) Options/Arbitration, (2) Trades, and (3) Free Agency.

The problem areas were:

First base, where Matt LaPorta had fallen on his face, especially in the second half (.257/.323/.394). And that line didn't really capture just how bad he looked at the plate. There was no internal backup plan to LaPorta in AAA, so the Indians would need to either sign or trade for a first baseman while LaPorta got one more shot in Columbus.

Left field, where the Indians had the same depth problems they had at first base. Michael Brantley was expected to play here, and wasn't that bad, but because Grady Sizemore would miss most of the second half, Brantley would spend a lot of time in center. Sizemore had a 2012 option, but the Indians were not likely to pick up, and even if they did, they couldn't count on Sizemore remaining healthy all season. And in general, they needed power, so signing a center fielder and sticking Brantley in left might fill a hole, but not improve the offense.

Center Field, depending on what they did in left. Michael Brantley's offensive game fit better here, so if they signed a left fielder, they could move him to center.

Other positions that needed improvement, but had internal solutions to:

Second base, which was filled when the Indians brought up Jason Kipnis from AAA. Kipnis was one of the Tribe's "Big Four" prospects, and he'd help keep the Indians in the race into early August.

Third base, which could be filled in 2012 by either Hannahan or Lonnie Chisenhall, one of the Indians' top prospects. This was a position that the Indians could afford to do nothing with, as they had some depth.

Catcher (Carlos Santana), Shortstop (Asdrubal Cabrera), and Right Field (Shin-Soo Choo) were covered. Designated Hitter was also covered, as Travis Hafner was signed through 2012, but his injury history demanded that the Indians have at least one decent backup.

A big blow happened just after the Indians acquired Ubaldo Jimenez (sending Alex White and Drew Pomeranz to Colorado in the process); Carlos Carrasco would need to undergo Tommy John surgery, and miss the 2012 season. Other than Fausto Carmona (who had an affordable 2012 option), all the pitchers that ended the season in the rotation were signed or under team control for the next season. But with Carrasco's injury, the Indians would need to think about adding a starter, for Carmona had ended the season on a down note and Josh Tomlin had to miss the month of September with a sore elbow.

This was the one area of the club that the Indians didn't really need to make a major acquisition in. In fact, a lot of the speculation at this time revolved around whether they'd trade one of their relievers (Rafael Perez, for example) for help in other areas.
