Gavin Williams, Joey Cantillo Begin Their Rehab Assignments As Guardians Affiliates Go 1-5 Thursday

Cleveland Guardians minor league recap for Friday May 31, 2024

Columbus Clippers 9, Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs 6

Columbus Clippers 2, Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs 10

Game 1 Box Score · Game 2 Box Score · Clippers move to 20-33

An unexpected rainout stopped us from seeing Gavin Williams return to action on Wednesday; but no need to worry, the Big Rig still got his first rehab start in on Thursday. Williams was a bit shaky, which is expected. He was on a pitch count, only allowed to throw 35 — so he ended the day throwing 1.1 innings and 32 total pitches. He gave up a few hard hits (one being a homer) and a walk, but his stuff was great. A big positive out of his outing today is that his fastball velo is still sitting in the high-90s.

Andrew Walters also had his debut in Columbus today, but it was all but ideal for the rising relief prospect. Walters gave up 2 bombs, totaling up to 4 earned runs before finishing up his inning of relief.

Steven Kwan continued on his rehab, accruing two free passes and a hit in game 1. He sat for the nightcap.

Jose Tena has continued his hot streak with two hits in game 1, while also flashing a pretty glove.

Akron RubberDucks 1, New Hampshire Fisher Cats 6

Box Score · RubberDucks fall to 28-20

It was a hard day for the Ducks on both fronts. The offense was only able to muster up four hits while Rodney Boone struggled through his own start.

Boone went 3.2 innings today, giving up four runs and K’ing only two. Jordan Jones and Alaska Abney both had to take the helm after Boone was pulled, as those two gave up two total.

One of the hits that the Rubberducks had was an RBI double by Joe Lampe, scoring Gabriel Martinez.

Lake County Captains 2, Cedar Rapids Kernels 4

Box Score · Captains fall to 28-20

Parker Messick was lights out Thursday. He pitched six strong, giving up only two hits, two walks and an earned run while striking out six batters.

As for the offense, they were able to get things going but could not execute well enough to score them a large amount of runs. The Caps left 8 men on base and held the advantage over the Kernels in the hits column. Things just couldn’t fall when runners were in scoring position, as they went 2-7 when given the chance.

Lynchburg Hillcats 3, Salem Red Sox 8 (F/11)

Box Score · Hillcats fall to 26-22

Alex Clemmey had himself a day. Though he gave up an earned run, Clem threw three and a third innings and eight out of the ten outs he made were K’s.

The day was not kind to Josh Harlow, however, as he gave up six runs and was charged with the loss for the Cats. Harlow walked four batters and gave up four hits in the process.

Jaison Chourio was the man in the limelight for the Hillcats on Thursday. He had three hits, a walk and an RBI.

ACL Guardians 4, ACL Rangers 16

Box Score · ACL Guardians fall to 6-12

What was thought to be a hopeful rehab start for Joey Cantillo turned south as the former Padres pitching prospect gave up five earned runs in 1.1 innings.

Keegan Zinn also had a nightmarish appearance as he relieved Cantillo, giving up six more runs in 1.2 IP.

The bats were very quiet on the day as well. Only three hits were amassed by the ACL Guards, as the squad will likely hope to forget about this game after a good night’s sleep.
