Shohei Ohtani signs $700M contract to be Dodger

News and Notes for December 10

MLB: Los Angeles Angels at Cleveland Indians Evan Habeeb-USA TODAY Sports

You may have heard that Shohei Ohtani was a free agent?

Well, he isn’t any longer. And Friday’s reports, such as the one by Jon Morosi, about him being on his way to being a Toronto Blue Jay, turned out to be completely wrong.

He signed with the Dodgers on Saturday afternoon for 700 million dollars. The Guardians might spend that much total on payroll by the middle of the next decade. Maybe.

A meaningful portion of Ohtani’s contract is said to be deferred. He is yet to pass a physical with the Dodgers.

Less good ballplayers

  • The White Sox acquired Max Stassi from Atlanta for a PTBNL. This feels like another one of those random guys who will hit multiple homers off Guardian pitching in 2024.
  • Rocco Baldelli says Byron Buxton is back to being a center fielder.
