Acquiring the 2023 Guardians - MLB roster; or the ongoing trail of Jerry Dybzinski, 47 years and counting

Hello all again. For the newer readers of Covering the Corner, this is my annual deep dive into the transaction chains. I believe my first post of this nature was back in 2008. And this would conclude the normal three post series, but I will post a fourth article in a few days as well.

This post only covers transactions from the end of the 2022 season through October 1, 2023. So, it will not cover any releases or trades that occur after this season. Those will instead be included in next year’s 2024 posts.

As previously noted in posts from previous seasons, Cleveland still owns the longest active MLB transaction chain in Emmanual Clase. Clase’s chain is a full ten chains/links dating all the way back to the drafting of Jerry Dybzinski in 1977. Clase is not due to be a free agent until the 2026 season, but the Guardians have two reasonable $10M team options for 2027/2028, so without any other changes to the contract, the chain could/should reach 52 years, but that would still end up short of the known record of 54 years (Mets: Jon Matlack -> David Wright). So, to pass that milestone, either Clase signs another extension or gets traded for another controllable player that will be with the team past 2030.

There was only one new player acquired hat created a chain, Noah Syndergaard, but he was promptly released, so that chain can go no further. Other chains that have expired include Amed Rosario (the Syndergaard deal) and both Austin Hedges and Owen Miller. Although there was a PTBNL in the Miller deal, but since nobody has been identified to date, that usually results in a cash transaction.

Jose Ramirez is still the longest tenured player, having been signed in 2011. There might be few more Two Degree chains established this winter if the front office decides to trade some of the middle infield depth, but that has not happened for a couple off-seasons so it is not clear that will change this year.

Notes: I have included compensation draft picks as being more than one degree as Cleveland obtained that pick based on a player they formally held rights to. Also, when I have identified a free agent year, it is the year they signed for (i.e. December 05 would be 2006). Additionally, whenever I could not find confirmation of an amateur free agent signing, the year defaults to their first appearance. [aFA = amateur free agent, mFA = minor league free agent, iFA = international amateur free agent (these usually sign for the highest $$ out of the international bonus pool money]
