Lets Build the 2016 roster with 2022 pieces!

Note: Obviously, building a team that looks similar to the 2016 isn't a guarantee of anything, but I thought this would be a fun way to show where they need to improve and what it is that they need to improve by. This is just for fun, so don't take it too seriously.

First, we are going to start with the position players from the 2016 team. I'm going to list out what the WRC+ was over the season, as well as how I think they held up defensively.

C*2 - Perez/Gomes: elite defense, very poor WRC+. They ran around a 40 WRC+ for the season between the two of them

1B - Santana: decent defense, he had a DRS of +4, and his WRC+ was about 130

2B - Kipnis: decent defense, DRS of +2, WRC+ of 115

SS - Lindor: elite defense, WRC+ of 110

3B - Ramirez: decent defense, DRS +5, WRC+ 120

RF - Naquin: poor defense, is listed at DRS -16, WRC+ of 130

CF - Davis: meh defense, DRS -5, WRC+ 90

LF - Chisenhall: decent defense, DRS +3, WRC+ 100

DH - Napoli: 110 WRC+

Bench, etc. - Guyer/Almonte/Crisp/Martinez/Uribe/Byrd: honestly, nothing special. average to poor bats out of everyone except Guyer, average defense.

So looking at this, they need good defense across the board, with 3 very good hitters (Santana, Ramirez, Naquin), and 3 above average hitters (Kipnis, Lindor, Napoli). Catcher can been poor hitting as long as it is elite defensively, and the other 2 spots can be filled by average players (Davis, Chisenhall). This team also was very good on the bases, so you'd want to replicate that as well.

Now, let's start placing people into the 2022 roster:

C*2 - Perez/Hedges: elite defense, very poor WRC+

1B -

2B -

SS -

3B - Ramirez: decent defense, very good WRC+

RF -

CF - Straw: elite defense, average WRC+

LF -

DH - Reyes: very good WRC+

We have the starting of a strong team. The catching tandem doesn't change but doesn't need to, weirdly. The 2016 tandem was not good hitting, neither is this one, but they are elite defensively, and this was good enough in 2016. Ramirez and Reyes are basically a wash between the top two hitters of Ramirez and Santana on the 2016 team. Straw at CF is a better player than Davis was, and so that compliments that spot very well.

I'm going to start with the OF here, and do a part 2 with the INF at a later date:

40 man OF depth PLUS guys who could maybe be added?:

Zimmer, Mercado, Johnson, Naylor, Ramirez, Rosario*, Palacios, Call, Gonzalez, Kwan, Benson

So what do they need. They need a starting OF who can put up decent defense and average production, and one that is a poor defender, but can really hit. They also probably need 2 bench spots, one that is a specialist, like Guyer was, and someone who legit doesn't really matter because the other guys were whatever.

Zimmer imo should be making the team. He is a good defender, and can easily be put into a starting role and take the Chisenhall spot. but less production, but more defense, and the gap that straw has as a player over Davis is certainly a bigger gap than the one Chisenhall has over Zimmer. Zimmer can start in RF imo, and at minimum takes the Coco/Almonte role of 4th OF and he is certainly better than either of those two. Rosario is also a fine addition into that same fold. Can start in a corner probably, hits LHP better than RHP, can also be a super UTIL guy off the bench who can spell all over the field with some work. He can be slotted into a bench roll or a starting roll in the OF if we want to move Zimmer to the bench.

The other position is the issue. No one on that list is anywhere close to a 130 WRC+ guy that Naquin was for us in 2016. They don't need to be, as you can swap out a lesser hitting player from the INF if you make it up in the INF, but at minimum they probably should be a 115 WRC+ guy. That is still a stretch. I don't think anyone has shown an ability to do that, but I think some of the guys have potential.

How I'd line it up is:

C*2 - Perez/Hedges: elite defense, very poor WRC+

1B -

2B -

SS -

3B - Ramirez: decent defense, very good WRC+

RF - Zimmer: decent defense, average WRC+

CF - Straw: elite defense, average WRC+

LF -

DH - Reyes: very good WRC+

Bench 1 - Rosario (OF/INF) (can be a bit like Guyer with good LHP numbers, but can play other positions as well)

Bench 2 - one of Mercado, Ramirez, Johnson

Bench 3 - Miller/Clement (INF)

For the OF, I'd be adding Palacios as a guy in AAA who can maybe fill the Rosario roll. I'd also be adding either Kwan or Benson, whichever one I liked more. And I'd be looking either at the trade market or FA market for the LF guy.

My OF 40 man would be (I need 6 guys imo): Straw, Zimmer, FA/Trade, Kwan/Benson, 2 of Mercado, Ramirez, Johnson (1 of which needs to be in the minors). I'd personally be having Naylor start on the 60IL, and then transition into a 1B during a rehab slash first month or so in the minors. That gets him out of the OF. Johnson is the only one with options, and I don't think having him toil in the minors again would be good for him, alas. I'd be looking to trade any one of the Mercado, Ramirez, Johnson tbh, (heck, all three) and if I need to sign a FA for a bench spot, so be it.

So with this, they have 3 of 6 good to very good hitter (Reyes, Ramirez, FA/Trade target for corner OF) and they have their poor hitter (C) and their two average hitters (Straw, Zimmer). The bench looks fine. They need 3 more good to very good hitters and they have a solid team. Next we will look to the INF!

That's the end of Part 1! Hope you enjoyed! Would welcome discussion below!
