Acquiring the Cleveland 2021 Franchise - MLB [The Continuing Saga of Jerry Dybzinski; 45 years and counting]

Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

Hello all again. As we got to experience a full uninterrupted season this year (am doubtful 2022 will be as nice with the expiring CBA), I get to do my annual post completely. This post only covers transactions from the end of the 2021 season through October 3, 2021. So it will not cover any releases or trades that occurred after the 2021 season. Those will instead be included in next year’s 2022 post.

For the newly acquainted to this article at Covering the Corner, this is my annual deep dive into the transaction chains. I believe my first post of this nature was back in 2008.

As previously noted, we now have the longest active MLB transaction chain in Emmanual Clase, a full ten chains/links dating all the way back to the drafting of Jerry Dybzinski in 1977. And as this is the 45th season of the chain, someone should send Jerry some sapphires or convince Clase to wear some on his necklace. Clase is not due to be a free agent until the 2027 season, so the chain could/should reach 50 years, but that would still end up short of the known record of 54 years (Mets: Jon Matlack-David Wright). So to pass that milestone, either Clase signs an extension or gets traded for another controllable player.

Bebo is still the longest tenured player, and the last player from the 2000s in the system, but I suspect he will be a cut as his 2022 buyout is just S450k. That will leave the Angry Hamster as the longest tenured player. Cleveland still has quite a few multi-chain players with the various trades of Mike Clevinger, Trevor Bauer and Carlos Carrasco the past few seasons.

The departures in the past year included two number one picks (Francisco Lindor and Tyler Naquin) as well as the other half of the Ten Link chain, Delino Deshields (but that was hardy a surprise).

Notes: I have included compensation draft picks as being more than one degree as Cleveland obtained that pick based on a player they formally held rights to. Also, when I have identified a free agent year, it is the year they signed for (i.e. December 05 would be 2006). Additionally, whenever I could not find confirmation of an amateur free agent signing, the year defaults to their first appearance. [aFA = amateur free agent, mFA = minor league free agent, iFA = international amateur free agent (these usually sign for the highest $$ out of the international bonus pool money]

All data is through the end of the 2021 season (Oct 03); no transactions after this season, those will be captured next year.
