The Cleveland Indians have issued a statement with their intent to “determine the best path forward” regarding the name of the club.
The statement comes less than 24 hours after the Washington Redskins issued a similar statement following pressure from their sponsors and removal of Redkins merchandise from Nike.com. Pressure came from sponsors including FedEx, who hold the naming rights to the Redskins’ home stadium.
It’s unknown if the Indians faced that kind of pressure yet, but you can bet it would come eventually and they’re clearly trying to get out ahead of it. It’s a name that has long overstayed its welcome, and much like the Redskins, it’s time for the team and city to move on.
This statement is nothing more than a tiny baby step, but it’s something we can at least hold ownership to. It’s difficult to imagine they say something like this then don’t eventually come to the right conclusion that the name needs to be gone.
No more being wishy-washy about — they are aware its insensitive, and it’s time to change it.
