What will Indians look like when year is over | cleveland.com
From Paul Hoynes:
If there is no season, the Indians won’t have to pay their big-league players. The Indians’ 25-man payroll was an estimated $92 million before the season was delayed.
The owners and players reached an agreement on March 27 that the players would forego their 2020 salaries for the same amount of service time they earned in 2019. That means Francisco Lindor would be a free agent after the 2021 season and would be eligible to make the same $17.5 million that he was scheduled to make in 2020 when he avoided arbitration.
Would the Indians agree to pay Lindor that much or trade him to recoup their losses in either prospects or a reduction in payroll? If he was traded, would veterans such as Carlos Santana and Brad Hand be moved? They’re each eligible for free agency if the Indians don’t exercise their club options for 2021.
Santana’s option is worth $17.5 million, while Hand’s is $10 million.
