Well, this is unexpected.

Yahoo! Sports’ Jeff Passan is reporting that Toronto Blue Jays third baseman Josh Donaldson, who is currently on a rehab assignment in the minor leagues, has been told he is headed to Cleveland in a trade with the Indians.

Donaldson hasn’t taken a big league at-bat since May 28, having spent the last three months on the DL with calf tightness. Just this week he played in two minor league games as part of a rehab assignment, despite experiencing some soreness in his calves. Through 36 games this season with the Blue Jays, Donaldson is slashing .234/.333/.423 with five home runs.

UPDATE: It’s official.

The Indians have acquired Donaldson from the Blue Jays in exchange for cash and a Player To Be Named Later (by Jan. 30, 2019). He is owed $3.7 million for the remainder of the season, and Toronto will cover $2.7 million of it. So the Indians are getting Donaldson at a discount.
