Podcast: Should the Indians keep Mike Napoli around to eventually take over for Terry Francona down the road? It’s not completely crazy. Just hear me out.
Mike Napoli was renowned for bringing together the Cleveland Indians clubhouse in 2016. Whether or not you believe in the importance of team chemistry (and whether it comes before or after winning), everyone in Cleveland loves Napoli, and he’s got a great mind for baseball. Maybe there’s some sense there.
Terry Francona seems pretty adamant that he’s not stepping away anytime soon, even with his health scare a year ago. And I’m certainly not here to advocate for him to be pushed out the door anytime soon, but Napoli sounded pretty content in “working his way up” through the Indians organization when speaking with Zack Meisel of The Athletic. If he really means it — and if another team wouldn’t swoop in and try to make him the next player-to-manage ala Gabe Kepler — he might be able to get plenty of minor-league seasoning and be ready for a full-time coaching gig whenever Tito decides he’s ready to call it quits and become a legendary broadcaster.
Anyway, I don’t think that’s too crazy. Neither is the idea of Corey Kluber winning a Kids Choice Award. Okay, that one’s a little crazy.
