Cleveland Indians: 2017 by the (uniform) numbers

Ever wonder who wore the number 33 the most in Indians history? Now you know.

Now that spring training is in full swing, here is a quick update to the uniform numbers being used this season by the Tribe players (and coaches):

#00: This hasn’t been worn since 2004 when Rick White wore it. Career Leader: Paul Dade (3)

#0: The only time this uniform was worn was by Junior Ortiz in 1992-93. Career Leader: Junior Ortiz (2)

#1: Michael Martinez NRI wore this in 2015 and 2016, but after his post season release he is now an NRI (non-roster invite). He is the 31st player to wear it. Eight managers/coaches have also worn it. Career Leader: Bobby Avila (10 seasons)

#2: The last player to wear this was by Aaron Cunningham in 2012. There have been 37 players and 14 managers/coaches to wear it. Bench Coach Brad Mills will wear it for his fifth consecutive season and his fourth as Bench Coach. Career Leader: Einar Diaz (7)

#3: This was retired in honor of Hall of Famer Earl Averill in 1975. Only 11 players have worn it, but five managers/coaches have also worn it. Career Leader: Earl Averill (10)

#4: Both Juan Uribe and Coco Crisp wore this for the Tribe in 2016. That now makes it 37 players to wear it. Ten managers/coaches have also worn it. This year it is assigned to NRI Richie Shaffer, who played for the Tampa Bay Rays last year. Career Leader: Jim Hegan (7). Note: Luis Isaac wore it for 12 seasons as a coach.

#5: This was retired in honor of Hall of Famer Lou Boudreau in 1970. There have been 20 players and four other managers/coaches other than Boudreau to wear it. Career Leader: Lou Boudreau (12)

#6: Both Marlon Byrd and Brandon Guyer wore this for the Tribe in 2016. That now makes it 38 players to wear it. Twelve managers/coaches have also worn it. Career Leaders: Joe Azcue, Joe Vozmik (6)

#7: Collin Cowgill wore this in his brief nine game stint in 2016. Yan Gomes switches from #10 to #7 so Edwin Encarnacion can keep the number he wore in Toronto. Plus, maybe a fresh start might get Yan back on track. Forty-seven different players have now worn #7 as well as four managers/coaches. Career Leader: Kenny Lofton (10)

#8: Lonnie Chisenhall has worn for the past five seasons) and he is the 37th player to wear it. Only one coach has worn #8 for the Tribe. Career Leader: Albert Belle (7)

#9: Erik Gonzalez wore this when he made his debut in 2016 after wearing #78 the past two springs. That now makes it 43 players and two coaches to wear it. Career Leader: Carlos Baerga (8)

#10: As noted above, Yan Gomes wore #10 from 2013 to 2016. But with the signing of Edwin Encarnacion, Yan has moved to #7, leaving this for Edwin. He will be the 30th player to wear it. Six managers/coaches have also worn it. Career Leader: Max Alvis (8)

#11: Jose Ramirez has had this uniform for three seasons now. wore this for the past two seasons after switching from #62 in 2013. He is the 41st player to wear it as well as four managers/coaches. Career Leader: Art Houtteman, Frankie Pytlak, Toby Harrah (5)

#12: Francisco Lindor has had this uniform for two seasons now. He is the 46th to wear it. Three managers/coaches have also worn it. Career Leader: Willis Hudlin (11)

#13: Tyler Holt was the last to wear “unlucky” #13 in 2015. Michael Choice wore it last spring as an NRI. This spring it has been assigned to NRI Chris Colabello who played for the Toronto Blue Jays last year. A total of fifteen players and one coach have worn it. Career Leader: Omar Vizquel (11)

#14: This was retired in honor of Hall of Famer Larry Doby in 1994. Twenty-nine players and three coaches have worn it. Career Leader: Larry Doby (9)

#15: This was last worn as a player by Andy Marte (RIP) and Wyatt Toregas in 2009. Former catching standout Sandy Alomar will wear it for the eighth consecutive year, and fourth as the First Base Coach. Forty players have worn #15 and Sandy is the only coach so far. Career Leader: Sandy Alomar (11)

#16: The last player to wear #16 was Jason Donald in 2012. Third Base Coach Mike Sarbaugh will wear it for the fifth consecutive season, his fourth as the Third base Coach. Forty-two players and four coaches have worn it. Career Leader: Larry Brown (9)

#17: Manager Terry Francona will wear #17 for his fifth straight year. It was last worn as a player by Shin-Soo Choo in 2012. Forty-six players and just one other coach have worn #17. Career Leader: Shin-Soo Choo (6)

#18: This was retired in honor of Mel Harder in 1990. There have been 19 players and one manager to wear it. Career Leader: Mel Harder (18)

#19: This was retired in honor of Hall of Famer “Rapid Robert” Bob Feller in 1957, the year after he retired. Only six other players wore this number before Feller did. Career Leader: Bob Feller (15)

#20: World Series hero Rajai Davis wore this number in 2016. It is not currently assigned to anyone. Fifty players have now worn it. Five coaches and one player-manager, Frank Robinson, also wore #20. Career Leader: Al Milnar (6)

#21: This was retired in honor of Hall of Famer Bob Lemon in 1998. Twenty-one other plyers besides Lemon have worn the uniform, along with three coaches (including Lemon himself) and one manager, Mike Hargrove. Career Leader: Bob Lemon (12)

#22: In 2016, Jason Kipnis became the career Tribe player leader with six seasons in #22. Fifty others besides Kipnis also have worn it, along with one manager, Eric Wedge, but no coaches. Career Leader: Jason Kipnis (6) Note: Eric Wedge wore it for 7 seasons as manager.

#23: Michael Brantley, even though injured for most of 2016, did get 11 appearances to qualify for his eighth season in #23. He is now tied for the most seasons and is the 48th player to wear it. No manager or coach has donned #23 yet. Career Leader: Michael Brantley, Chris Bando (8)

#24: Mr. Circumstance Andrew Miller picked up this number after arriving from the New York Yankees last summer. Miller becamse the 33rd player to wear this number. That list also includes both Terry and his father, Tito, when they played for Cleveland. Three coaches have also worn #24. Joey Butler had it last spring. Career Leader: Early Wynn (9)

#25: Jason Giambi was the last player to wear it in 2014. It has been unofficially retired in honor of Jim Thome (and I expect it will be officially done when Thome goes into the Hall of Fame). Only 29 players wore it, along with three coaches. Career Leader: Jim Thome (12)

#26: Mike “Party at” Napoli wore #26 with pride last season, becoming the 44th player to wear it. Five managers/coaches have also worn it. This year it is assigned to NRI Austin Jackson, who was with the Chicago White Sox last season. Career Leader: Brook Jacoby (9)

#27: Bryan Shaw just finished his fourth season with this number. He is the 32nd player to wear it along with seven managers/coaches. Career Leader: Jaret Wright, Steve Gromek (6)

#28: Corey Kluber has been #28 for five seasons in a row now after wearing #34 in 2011. The Klubot is the 38th player to wear it. Seven coaches have also worn #28. Career Leader: Rick Manning (7)

#29: Hitting Coach Ty Van Burkleo has worn it for the last five seasons. The last plater to don it was Juan Diaz in 2012. Forty players have worn #29 and five coaches as well. Career Leader: Andre Thornton (10)

#30: Tyler Naquin Chris Johnson became the 49th to wear it this in 2015. It is currently assigned to Last spring, #30 was assigned to NRI Anthony Recker. But when Tyler Naquin was promoted, he switched form #72 (his spring number) and became the 45th player to wear it. Four managers/coaches have also worn it. Career Leader: Joe Carter (6)

#31: Danny Salazar just finished his fourth season in #31 and he is the 48th player to wear it. No manager or coach has donned #31 yet. Career Leader: Jim Perry (7)

#32: Pitching coach Mickey “Magician” Callaway has worn it for the last four seasons. It was last worn as a player by Matt Albers in 2013. Forty-eight different players have now worn #32 as well as four managers/coaches. Career Leader: Al J Smith (6) Note: Charlie Manuel also wore it for 6 seasons as a manager and coach.

#33: Last spring, NRI Robbie Grossman was assigned this number. Tom Gorzelanny ended up wearing it in June/July He wore #50 last spring. That now makes it 51 players and three coaches to wear it. It is not currently assigned to anyone. Career Leader: Mudcat Grant (7)

#34: Zach McAllister just finished his fifth season in #34 and he is the 40th player to wear it. Only one coach has worn it. Career Leader: Steve Hargan (8)

#35: Abraham Almonte has worn this the past two seasons and is the 40th player to wear it. Four managers/coaches have donned it as well. Career Leader: Wayne Kirby (5) Note: Joel Skinner also wore it for 9 seasons as a manager and coach.

#36: Jesus Aguilar actually has three career seasons in this number, but only covering 35 games. He is the 50th guy to wear this number, along with one coach. It is not currently assigned to anyone. Career Leader: Rick Waits (9)

#37: Cody Allen has totaled five seasons in #37. He is the 31st to wear it. No manager or coach has worn it yet. Career Leader: Jake Westbrook (9)

#38: Last spring, NRI Will Venable wore #38, but Chris Gimenez put it on after being bought from the Texas Rangers. Gimenez made it 38 players to wear it, along with two coaches. It is not currently assigned to anyone. Career Leader: Eric Plunk (7)

#39: This was last worn by Giovanny Urshela in 2015, and it is still assigned to him. He is the 24th player to wear it, along with one coach. Career Leader: Gary Bell (10)

#40: Last year, NRI Craig Stammen wore #40, but as he never was called up to Cleveland, Jerry Sands is the last guy to have worn it, in 2015. There have been 31 players to wear #40, and six coaches as well. This year it is assigned to NRI James Russell who pitched for the Philadelphia Phillies in 2016. Career Leader: Bartolo Colon (6) Note: Bill Lobe also wore it for 8 seasons as a coach.

#41: Carlos Santana has now finished seven seasons in #41. He is just the 15th to wear it, along with five coaches. This number has been worn every year since 1990, save 2003, but by only three players, Charles Nagy, Victor Martinez and Santana. Career Leader: Charles Nagy (13)

#42: This was retired by major league baseball in honor of Jackie Robinson in 1997. It was last worn by Mike Jackson in 1999. A total of fifteen players and six managers/coaches have worn it. Career Leader: Sonny Siebert (6) Note: Red Kress also wore it for 8 seasons as a coach.

#43: As with Santana above, Josh Tomlin has also worn his number for seven straight seasons. Just seventeen guys have worn it, along with three coaches. Career Leader: Josh Tomlin (7) Note: Dan Williams was a Bullpen Coach for 9 seasons and Mel Harder also wore it for 15 seasons as a Pitching Coach. [That means Harder wore #18 and #43 for a total of 33 seasons for the Tribe!]

#44: Ross Detwiler wore this during his brief April stay last season. Detwiler makes it 37 players to wear it, along with seven coaches. It is not currently assigned to anyone. Career Leader: Neal Heaton (5) Note: Tony Cuccinello also wore it for 5 seasons as a coach.

#45: Adam Moore has worn this uniform his past two seasons with the Tribe, totaling just 10 games. Only 23 guys have worn it, along with five coaches. Oddly enough it isn’t assigned to him this spring, but rather NRI Erik Kratz, who played with the Houston Astros and Pittsburgh Pirates in 2016. Career Leader: Paul Assenmacher (5) Note: John Goryl also wore it for 5 seasons as a coach.

#46: This was last worn as a player by Cord Phelps in 2012-13. It has been born by 27 players. The only coach to wear it is current Bullpen Coach Jason Bere, who will wear it for the third straight season. Career Leader: Steve Dunning (4)

#47: Trevor Bauer now has four seasons under his belt with #47. Twenty-nine players have donned it, along with two coaches. Career Leader: Trevor Bauer (4)

#48: Tommy Hunter wore this briefly in 2016, becoming the 20th player to wear it. This year it is assigned to free agent signee Boone Logan. Career Leader: Travis Hafner (9)

#49: Austin Adams wore this from 2014 to 2016. In all, twenty-three guys have worn it, along with just one coach. This year it is assigned to NRI Chris Narveson who pitched for the Miami Marlins last year. Career Leader: Jose Mesa, Tom Candiotti (7)

#50: When Shawn Morimando made his MLB debut last summer, he became the 17th to wear it. However, Morimando is wearing #74 this spring. NRI Steve Delabar is assigned to it this spring. He pitched for the Cincinnati Reds last year. Career Leader: Jason Davis, Nick Hagadone (5)

#51: Shawn Armstrong has worn #51 the past two seasons. His is the 17th to wear it. Three coaches have also worn #51. Career Leader: Jacob Cruz (4) Note: Carl Willis also wore it for 6 seasons as a coach.

#52: Last spring this was assigned to NRI Felipe Paulino. But when Mike Clevinger made his MLB debut, he became the 12th player to wear it. Clevinger wore #73 last spring. Career Leader: C.C. Sabathia (8)

#53: Mr. Meme himself, Jeff Manship donned this for the past two seasons. That makes it fifteen players to have worn #53. Adam Moore (now as an NRI) has switched from #45 this spring. Career Leader: Paul Shuey (9)

#54: Last spring, it was assigned to NRI Joe Thatcher. But ALCS hero Ryan Merritt ended up wearing it when he debuted in May. Merritt is the 12th guy to wear it, along with just one coach. Career Leader: David Riske (6)

#55: Roberto Perez has worn #55 for the past three years. He is just the 8th player to wear it, along with just one coach. Career Leader: Roberto “Fausto Carmona” Hernandez (7)

#56: Cody Anderson wore #56 in both 2015 and 2016. He is the 16th player to wear it. Career Leader: Alan Embree, Fernando Cabrera, Frank Herrmann and Sean DePaula (3)

#57: Kyle Crockett has worn this the past three seasons and is the 18th player to wear it. Career Leader: Kyle Crockett, Jeff Shaw (3)

#58: T.J. House wore this from 2014 to 2016 (he is now with the Blue Jays). Just seventeen guys have worn it so far. This year it is assigned to NRI Carlos Frias who pitched for the Los Angeles Dodgers last year. Career Leader: T.J. House, Jeanmar Gomez (3)

#59: Carlos Carrasco has worn #59 in all of his seven active seasons (he missed 2012 with an injury). He is the 13th to wear it. Career Leader: Carlos Carrasco (7)

#60: The last player to wear #60 was Jhonny Peralta in 2003, when put it on for his MLB debut season. Just five players have worn it, but three coaches have as well. Assistant Hitting Coach Matt Quatraro returns for his fourth straight season. Career Leader: Jhonny Peralta, Bill Selby, Brian Tallet, Kane Davis and Rod Allen (1) Note: Matt Quatraro also wore it for 3 seasons as a coach.

#61: In 2016, Dan Otero became just the eighth Tribe player to wear #61. Career Leader: Alex Ramirez, Jason Stanford (3)

#62: Last spring this was assigned to NRI Joba Chamberlain. Both he and Adam Plutko, who wore #76 last spring, ended up donning it in 2016. That makes it nine players and one coach to have worn #62. This spring it is assigned to Nick Goody, who was purchased from the New York Yankees this offseason. Career Leader: Jim Poole (4)

#63: Justin Masterson was the last player to wear this back in 2014. Masterson was just the fifth player to wear it. This is the second straight spring it is assigned to NRI Guillermo Quiroz. Career Leader: Rafael Betancourt (7)

#64: This hasn’t been worn since 2004 when Fernando Cabrera put it on for his MLB debut season. Only four guys have worn it. Bullpen Catcher Armando Camacaro will wear it for the seventh straight year. Career Leader: Tom Kramer (2) Note: Armando Camacaro also wore it for 6 seasons as a bullpen catcher.

#65: When Joseph Colon made his MLB debut last summer, he became just the fourth guy to wear #65. He is assigned to it again this year. Career Leader: Cliff Lee (2)

#66: When Perci Garner was called up at the end of August last year, he became just the fourth player to wear #66, and the first since Willie Martinez in 2000. He is assigned to it again this year. Career Leader: Perci Garner, Mark Higgins, Russell Branyan, Willie Martinez (1)

#67: The only player to wear this was Chris Nichting in 2000. Last spring it was assigned to NRI Jarrett Grube. This year, Tim Cooney, a waiver claim who last pitched for the St. Louis Cardinals in 2015, has been assigned to it. Career Leader: Chris Nichting (1)

#68: Only three guys have worn #68, the last being Michael Aubrey in 2008 in his MLB debut. Last spring it was assigned to NRI James Ramsey. This is currently assigned to NRI Tyler Olson. He pitched for the Yankees briefly in 2016, before being claimed by the Kansas City Royals and then the Tribe in July. Career Leader: Michael Aubrey, Scott Jordan, Turner Ward (1)

#69: The only player to wear this was Luis Medina in 1988. Last spring, Ryan Merritt wore it as an NRI. It is not currently assigned to anyone. Career Leader: Luis Medina (1)

#70: This uniform has never been worn by a Tribe player. Last spring it is assigned to Cody Anderson. This spring it is assigned to prospect Greg Allen, who is at the facility as an NRI.

#71: This hasn’t been worn since 1929 in the Tribe debut season of uniform numbers by Johnny Hodapp. This is the second straight spring it is assigned to NRI Dylan Baker. Career Leader: Johnny Hodapp (1)

#72: This number has been just twice, the last time when Jason Giambi switched numbers in honor of Jim Thome in 2014. Last spring it was assigned to NRI Tyler Naquin. But this year , it is assigned to the “Free Yandy Diaz” movement. Career Leader: John McDonald, Jason Giambi (1)

#73: This hasn’t been worn since 2002 when Ricardo Rincon finished up his Tribe career (and he was just the second guy to wear it). Last spring it was assigned to Mike Clevinger. This spring it was assigned to top prospect Francisco Mejia. Career Leader: Ricardo Rincon (4)

#74: This uniform has never been worn by a Tribe player. This is the second straight spring it is assigned to Shawn Morimando.

#75: The only time this uniform was worn was by Mike Walker in 1988. Last spring it was assigned to Joseph Colon. This year it is assigned Hoby Milner, the Rule 5 draftee from the Philadelphia Philles. Career Leader: Mike Walker (1)

#76: The only time this uniform was worn was by Tom Magrann in 1989. This is the second straight spring it is assigned to NRI Adam Plutko. Career Leader: Tom Magrann (1)

#77: The only time this uniform was worn was by Jack Armstrong in 1992. This is the second straight spring it is assigned to NRI Eric Stamets. Career Leader: Jack Armstrong (1)

#78: This uniform has never been worn by a Tribe player. Last spring it was assigned to Erik Gonzalez. This year it is assigned to top prospect Bradley Zimmer.

#79: This uniform has never been worn by a Tribe player. Last spring it was assigned to NRI Todd Hankins. This year it is assigned to NRI Ronny Rodriguez.

#80: This uniform has never been worn by a Tribe player. Last spring it was assigned to NRI Will Roberts. This year it is assigned to NRI Josh Martin.

#81: This uniform has never been worn by a Tribe player. Last spring it was assigned to Jeremy Lucas. It is not currently assigned to anyone.

#82: This uniform has never been worn by a Tribe player. Bullpen Catcher Ricky Pacione has worn it for three straight years. Career Leader: Coach Ricky Pacione (3)

#83: This uniform has never been worn by a Tribe player. This spring it is assigned to NRI Travis Banwart.

#86: This uniform has never been worn by a Tribe player. This spring it is assigned to NRI Nellie Rodriguez.

#86: This uniform has never been worn by a Tribe player, but two coaches have. Replay Coordinator Mike Barnett wore #87 in 2016. Career Leader: Coach Mike Barnett, Coach Dave Keller (1)

#88: Josh Outman wore this in 2014 and became the second player to wear it. It is not currently assigned to anyone. Career Leader: Josh Outman, Rene Gonzales (1)

#99: This uniform has never been worn by a Tribe player. This spring it was assigned to NRI Daniel Robertson, who played for the Seattle Mariners in 2016.
