Cleveland Indians designate Joba Chamberlain and Tom Gorzelanny for assignment

Hopefully holidays are exempted from "do more than embed tweets!"

Ken Blaze-USA TODAY Sports

The Indians made a bit of a surprising move today, designating Joba Chamberlain for assignment. Tom Gorzelanny was let go, too, but that one was widely expected.

Chamberlain has pitched much worse than his 2.25 ERA would indicate but it is a bit curious that Tommy Hunter sticks around instead of him.

I can't imagine this series of moves will be popular with the clecommers and have already seen folks on twitter who found their pitchforks to be in total working order, but I can't say I mind much.

Chamberlain was going to be a free agent after the season no matter what, which is not true of Zach McAllister and Jeff Manship. Hunter was in the same boat as Chamberlain, but got a MLB deal in the offseason, which Chamberlain could not muster.

It's possible that the Indians will find a trade partner for Chamberlan and acquire their next Mike Clevinger in the process.
