Yes, you are seeing correctly: the Indians now have a seven-man bullpen. That doesn’t mean that the Indians should be satisfied with the overall quality of the relievers, but the quantity was overkill given how deep the starters have been going into games.

A four-man bench gives Terry Francona a lot more flexibility in close-and-late situations. Hopefully this also means more pinch-running in sudden death situation (for Mike Napoli or Juan Uribe, for instance).

Major-league Transactions

July 13

Sent C Roberto Perez on rehab assignment to Lake County (A-)

Sent OF Michael Brantley on rehab assignment to Lake County (A-)

Optioned LHP TJ House to Columbus (AAA)

July 14

Sent C Roberto Perez on rehab assignment to Columbus (AAA)

Recalled IF Erik Gonzalez from Columbus (AAA)

The Indians had been going with one backup infielder since they DFAed Michael Martinez, and the backup was either Jose Ramirez or Juan Uribe, depending on the lineup. Gonzalez has mainly been a shortstop throughout his pro career, but he also can play second, third, and the outfield.

July 15

Sent OF Michael Brantley on rehab assignment to Akron (AA)

July 17

Placed Tommy Hunter on the 15-day Disabled List (non-baseball related injury)

Recalled RHP Cody Anderson from Columbus (AAA)

Traded LHP Ross Detwiler to the Oakland Athletics for cash

Hunter injured his back on a fall down the stairs at home (he was holding his son, and fell in such a way to protect him). A subsequent MRI revealed a fracture in his back; we should find out in a couple days what the required treatment will be. The Indians already were in the market for a reliever, and this makes it even more likely they will make a deal.

July 18

Placed C Yan Gomes on the 15-day Disabled List (right shoulder)

Activated C Roberto Perez from the 60-day Disabled List

Optioned RHP Cody Anderson to Columbus (AAA)

Recalled LHP Kyle Crockett from Columbus (AAA)

Sent RHP Zach McAllister on rehab assignment to Columbus (AAA)

Had Gomes remained healthy for another week (until Perez’s rehab stint ended), they may have made the swap anyway, with Gomes heading to Columbus to work on his offense, but unfortunately the injury made the decision for them. Gomes is slated to be out 6-8 weeks, which would place his return some time in September. If the Indians are still in line to make the playoffs, they’d have another interesting decision to make regarding which catchers they place on their playoff roster, but let’s not get too ahead of ourselves.

As for the bullpen move, the revolving door continues. Anderson was up to help provide some length in the wake of the extra inning game on Saturday, but thanks to Josh Tomlin’s fine outing, he wasn’t needed. Crockett is back, but I don’t think Terry Francona will be too eager to use him in any high-leverage situations. (edit: as we saw in the eighth inning last night, the Indians opted to have Jeff Manship face Jarrod Dyson instead of using Crockett against him.

The big promotion here among the catchers is Chu, who moved up from Arizona. Chu played in Mahoning Valley last year, so this wasn’t an actual two-tier promotion.

A: Sent OF Dorssys Paulino on rehab assignment to AZL Indians (R-)
