2016 Cleveland Indians by the (uniform) numbers: #00 to #40

With spring training well under way, here is a quick update to the uniform numbers being used this season by the Tribe players (and coaches). Part I.

#00: This hasn't been worn since 2004 when Rick White wore it. Career Leader: Paul Dade (3)

#0: The only time this uniform was worn was by Junior Ortiz in 1992-93. Career Leader: Junior Ortiz (2)

#1: Michael Martinez wore this last year during his September call-up and is assigned to him again. Although this year he is an NRI (non-roster invite). He was the 32nd player to wear it. Career Leader: Bobby Avila (10 seasons)

#2: This was last worn by Aaron Cunningham in 2012. Bench coach Brad Mills will wear it for his fourth consecutive season and third as the bench coach.  Career Leader: Einar Diaz (7)

#3: This was retired in honor of Hall of Famer Earl Averill in 1975. Career Leader: Earl Averill (10)

#4: Mike Aviles wore this for three seasons and he was the 35th player to wear it. This year it is assigned to Juan Uribe. Career Leader: Jim Hegan (7)

#5: This was retired in honor of Hall of Famer Lou Boudreau in 1970. Career Leader: Lou Boudreau (12)

#6: Zach Walters has worn this in his two seasons after he arrived in the Asdrubal Cabrera trade. Walters is the 35th player to wear it. This year it is also assigned to NRI Marlon Byrd who played for the Reds and Giants last year. Career Leader: Joe Azcue, Joe Vozmik (6)

#7: David Murphy wore this during his two seasons in Cleveland and he was the 47th player to wear it. It is now assigned to Collin Cowgill. Career Leader: Kenny Lofton (10)

#8: Lonnie Chisenhall has worn this for four seasons now (he was #27 in 2011) and he is the 35th player to wear it. He is just two seasons away from tying Albert Belle. Career Leader: Albert Belle (7)

#9: Ryan Raburn wore this number for the past three seasons. This year it is assigned to NRI Shane Robinson who played for the Twins last year. If he wears it in 2016, he would be the 42nd player to wear it. Career Leader: Carlos Baerga (8)

#10: This will be the fourth season for Yan Gomes to wear this uniform. He is the 31st player to wear it. Career Leader: Max Alvis (8)

#11: Jose Ramirez wore this for the past two seasons after switching from #62 in 2013. He is the 43rd player to wear it. Career Leader: Art Houtteman, Frankie Pytlak, Toby Harrah (5)

#12: Brett Hayes wore this last April and May. And then when Francisco Lindor was called up in June, he took over the number. Lindor is the 49th to wear it. Career Leader: Willis Hudlin (11)

#13: Tyler Holt wore this in 2015 after his call up. He was previously #62 in 2014. This year it is assigned to NRI Michael Choice who played for the Rangers last year. If Choice gets called up this year, he would be the 15th player to wear it. Career Leader: Omar Vizquel (11)

#14: This was retired in honor of Hall of Famer Larry Doby in 1994. Career Leader: Larry Doby (9)

#15: This was last worn as a player by Andy Marte and Wyatt Toregas in 2009. Former catching standout Sandy Alomar will wear it for the seventh consecutive year, and third as the first base coach. Career Leader: Sandy Alomar (11)

#16: This was last worn by Jason Donald in 2012. Third base coach Mike Sarbaugh will wear it for the third consecutive season. Career Leader: Larry Brown (9)

#17: Manager Terry Francona will wear it for his fourth straight year. It was last worn as a player by Shin-Soo Choo in 2012. Career Leader: Shin-Soo Choo (6)

#18: This was retired in honor of Mel Harder in 1990. Career Leader: Mel Harder (18)

#19: This was retired in honor of Hall of Famer "Rapid Robert" Bob Feller in 1957, the year after he retired. Career Leader: Bob Feller (15)

#20: C.C. Lee wore this for the past three years. This year the honor goes to Rajai Davis. He will be the 50th player to wear it. Career Leader: Al Milnar (6)

#21: This was retired in honor of Hall of Famer Bob Lemon in 1998. Career Leader: Bob Lemon (12)

#22: Jason Kipnis has worn this in all five of his seasons as an Indian. He is the 51st player to wear it. He is now tied for the career lead and on Opening Day will become the career leader in seasons with six. Career Leader: Mike Fischlin, Jason Kipnis, Roy Weatherly (5)

#23: Michael Brantley has worn this for seven straight appearance (he did wear #61 briefly in 2009 as well). He is also the 51st player to wear it and will tie for the career lead once he appears in a game this season. Career Leader: Chris Bando (8)

#24: Michael Bourn wore this in all three of his years in Cleveland. He was the 36th to wear it. This year it is assigned to Joey Butler. Career Leader: Early Wynn (9)

#25: Jason Giambi wore this in 2014. It has been unofficially retired in honor of Jim Thome. Career Leader: Jim Thome (12)

#26: Gavin Floyd wore this last year in his lone season on Lake Erie. He was the 44th player to wear it. This year it is assigned to Mike Napoli. Career Leader: Brook Jacoby (9)

#27: Bryan Shaw has had this number for three seasons now. He also wore #47 in 2013.  He is the 36th player to wear it. Career Leader: Jaret Wright, Steve Gromek (6)

#28: Corey Kluber has been #28 for four seasons now after wearing #34 in 2011. He is the 38th player to wear it. Career Leader: Rick Manning (7)

#29: This was last worn by Juan Diaz in 2012. Hitting coach Ty Van Burkleo returns for his fourth straight year in it.  Career Leader: Andre Thornton (10)

#30: Chris Johnson became the 49th to wear it this in 2015. It is currently assigned to NRI Anthony Recker who caught for the Mets last year. Career Leader: Joe Carter (6)

#31: Danny Salazar has been #31 for all three seasons with the Tribe and he is the 51st player to wear it. Career Leader: Jim Perry (7)

#32: This was last worn as a player by Matt Albers in 2013, becoming the 48th to wear it. Pitching coach Mickey Callaway will wear it for the third straight season. Career Leader: Al J Smith (6)

#33: This was worn by Nick Swisher for the past three seasons. He was the 51st to wear it. This year it is assigned to NRI Robbie Grossman who played for the Astros last year. Career Leader: Mudcat Grant (7)

#34: After Corey Kluber abandoned this number in 2012, Zach McAllister picked it up and has worn it for four straight years. He is the 38th to wear it. McAllister did wear #57 in 2011. Career Leader: Steve Hargan (8)

#35: At the start of last season, Marc Rzepczynski made his third season appearance in this number. Interestingly enough, when he was traded to the San Diego Padres at last year's deadline, his replacement, Abraham Almonte also assumed the same number. He is the 47th to wear it and it is assigned to him this year. Career Leader: Wayne Kirby (5)

#36: Jesus Aguilar is the 50th guy to wear this number. This covers a mere 26 games over two seasons.  Career Leader: Rick Waits (9)

#37: Cody Allen now has four seasons under his belt in this number. He is the 34th to wear it. Career Leader: Jake Westbrook (9)

#38: Shaun Marcum successfully navigated the NRI route last season to become the 38th player to wear it. This year it is assigned to NRI Will Venable who played for the Padres and Rangers last year. Career Leader: Eric Plunk (7)

#39: Last spring, this was assigned to NRI Scott Downs. However, when Giovanny Urshela got his promotion last season, he switched from his spring number of #73 to this number and became the 28th player to wear it. Career Leader: Gary Bell (10)

#40: Last spring Jerry Sands was #61 as an NRI. However, he switched to #40 when he made the team and became the 32nd player to wear it. This year it is assigned to NRI Craig Stammen who pitched for the Nationals last year. Career Leader: Bartolo Colon (6)
