How did the Cleveland Indians acquire their current 2015 MLB players?

Or the continuing opus of Jerry Dybzinski...

Who knew a light hitting shortstop begets a Cy Young?
Who knew a light hitting shortstop begets a Cy Young?
Ken Blaze-USA TODAY Sports

The 2015 season was not nearly as rough on long chains as 2014 was. And we got good news for fans of Dybzinski (like myself) as Corey Kluber signed that extension that could keep him in Cleveland until 2021. So the drafting of old friend Jerry could approach 44 seasons if Kluber plays through all of his options. And that would be just three years short of the franchise record of 47 years; set when drafting of Ray Fosse in 1965 lasted through John Drennen in 2012.

There currently is only one significant long chain in Kluber. Bryan Shaw and Trevor Bauer are both four degree guys though. And a new three chain arrived in the form of Abraham Almonte, who looks like he may stick around in 2016.

The longest tenured draftee still belongs to Josh Tomlin from 2006. The next draft year that still has players in the system is 2008. Those are Lonnie Chisenhall (1), Trey Haley (2), T.J. House (16) and Roberto Perez (33). But that is only half of who was left last year as Tim Fedroff (7), Clayton Cook (9), Adam Abraham (13) and Benny Suarez (36) have moved on. The 2009 draft is getting low as well with just four (five?) guys left as well: Jason Kipnis (2), Austin Adams (5), Joseph Colon (12) and Tyler Sturdivant (27). Mike Rayl (15) is gone and Carlos Moncrief (14) is in DFA land right now.

The longest tenured amateur free agent is still Danny Salazar from 2007. There are just three players signed in 2008 left: Jesus Aguilar, Giovanny Urshela, and Justin Toole, with the departure of Elvis Araujo. There are just three left from 2009 as well, C.C. Lee, Erik Gonzalez and Alex Monsalve.

This year, the Indians only signed 23 of their 41 draft picks. But Brady Aiken (1), Tyler Krieger (4) and Justin Garza (8) have yet to suit up for a Tribe affiliate. And none of the international free agents form this year (Jose Fermin, Henry Pujols and Luis Ovedo) have dressed yet either, but that isn't uncommon with those signings.

After the list of all the team rosters with how each player was acquired is a list of players let go in the past year. If they have joined another team, they are noted in parentheses.

Notes: I have included compensation draft picks as being more than one degree as the Indians obtained that pick based on a player they formally held rights to. Also, when I have identified a free agent year, it is the year they signed for (i.e. December 11 would be 2012). Additionally, whenever I could not find confirmation of an amateur free agent signing, the year defaults to their first appearance. [aFA = amateur free agent, mFA = minor league free agent]

All data is through Sunday September 6. Today we will focus on the major league roster. Saturday will be the Columbus Clippers, Akron RubberDucks and Lynchburg Hillcats rosters. And then on Monday we will look at the Lake County Captains, Mahoning Valley Scrappers and Arizona and Dominican Rookie League rosters.
