Tribe now 5-9
The White Sox comfortably clinched their three-game series with the Tribe this afternoon, after the Indians wasted countless RISP opportunities in the early going. For inning after inning the resilient Jeff Samardzija performed a high wire act, escaping trouble in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 6th, including a bases loaded situation in the 3rd. David Murphy did manage to go 2-3 and Bourn 2-5, but practically the only Tribe highlight was this throw by Roberto Perez to nail a base-stealer (video). The final Tribe futility tally was 0-10 with RISP and 11 left on base.
Lacking any run support whatsoever (as usual!), everything fell on Corey Kluber's shoulders, and for once he wasn't able to deliver. Jose Abreu took him for a solo homer in the 1st, and thereafter the Klubot experienced a major malfunction, ultimately conceding six runs on a career-high 13 hits in 6.0 IP. After a disastrous start to the 7th, in which three runs were scored on three singles, a double and a wild pitch, Kluber was replaced by Anthony Swarzak, who at least managed to stem the bleeding by striking out three in two innings of garbage-time relief.
The Tribe has a day off tomorrow before heading to Detroit for a three-game series and then heading back home for three more against the Royals. Things could still get worse before they get better...
