A look at the Indians' 9 walk-off grand slams at Jacobs/Progressive Field

On Thursday Nick Swisher hit the Indians' 74th walk-off home run since Jacobs/Progressive opened in 1994. That's easily the most by any team in baseball during that time span. Swisher's blast came with the bases loaded, which makes it the 9th walk-off grand slam in stadium history. Here they all are, with a bit of information about the state of the game at the time of the big hit.

I've included he Win Probability Added (WPA) of each one. WPA measures how much a given play changed a team's probability of winning the game. Obviously after a walk-off grand slam, a team's probability of winning is 100%, but not every one of these hits happened in the same context. There could be 0 outs, or 1 or 2. The game could have been tied, or the Tribe could have been down 1, 2, or 3 runs.

Albert Belle (7/31/1996 vs. Blue Jays) - The Indians were down 2-0 with 2 outs in the 9th inning when Belle took Bill Risley deep. WPA: .807

Sandy Alomar (5/3/1998 vs. Devil Rays) - The Indians were down 8-6 with 2 outs in the 9th inning when Alomar took Roberto Hernandez deep. WPA: .808

Omar Vizquel (5/23/1999 vs. Tigers) - The Indians were down 4-3 with 1 out in the 9th inning when Vizquel took Todd Jones deep. WPA: .432

Bill Selby (7/14/2002 vs. Yankees) - The Indians were down 7-6 with 2 outs in the 9th inning when Selby took Mariano Rivera deep. WPA: .717

Jim Thome (7/28/2002 vs. Tigers) - The Indians were down 6-5 with 1 out in the 9th inning when Thome took Juan Acevedo deep. WPA: .451

Carlos Santana (4/29/2011 vs. Tigers) - The score was tied 5-5 with 1 out in the 9th inning when Santana took Joaquin Benoit deep. WPA: .167

Travis Hafner (7/7/2011 vs. Blue Jays) - The Indians were down 4-1 with 1 out in the 9th inning when Hafner took Luis Perez deep. WPA: .801

Nick Swisher (6/19/2014 vs. Angels) - The Indians were down 3-1 with 2 outs in the 10th inning when Swisher took Ernesto Frieri deep. WPA: .831

It's cool that Belle hit the first two, and no one else has matched that yet. It'd be even cooler if Santana and Swisher did both match him later this season. I also like that Selby and Thome's came just two weeks apart.

As you may have noticed, Swisher's shot was the only one of these to take place in extra innings, so it's the only one of those in stadium history, and only the fourth in franchise history (Carlos Martinez in 1992, Don Dillard in 1962, Harvey Kuenn in 1960).

Swisher's also has the highest WPA of any of the nine. It was the fourth one to come with two outs in the inning, while Hafner's is the only one that came with the Indians down 3 runs. None of the nine quite creates the ultimate scenario, in which there are two outs and the Indians are down three runs, so we should keep watching for one of those.

Recency and WPA would say Swisher's was the best, but Selby's has the cache of having come off the greatest closer in baseball history, while Belle's first one came during the greatest season most of us have been alive for and was hit to dead center off an All-Star who went on to set the career saves record.

It's close, but Albert's gets my vote. How about you?
