Indians activate Nick Swisher, place Jason Giambi on disabled list

"Knee inflammation"

Rick Osentoski-USA TODAY Sports

The Indians have activated Nick Swisher from the disabled list, where he's been since May 27 with a hyperextended knee. Swisher has struggled so far in 2014, with a team-low (among starters) OPS of just .631. He struggled with his health a year ago too, and it certain feels like the final two and a half years of his contract are not going to be pretty, but perhaps he'll surprise us.

Conveniently, Jason Giambi is suffering from knee inflammation, and has been placed on the 15-day DL, clearing a roster spot for Swisher. Giambi is 43 years old and has a line of .128/.212/.277. His wRC+ of 27 places him in the bottom 2% of all MLB players with 50+ plate appearances. He's had a fine career, and collected some huge hits for the Indians, but I think it's probably time for him to accept a coaching role of some type.

This swap means George Kottaras remains on the roster, which means Carlos Santana shouldn't be catching except in an emergency, which I think is good. I was excited about the idea of his incredible versatility before the season began, but now I think it's been a burden for him to have to move around the field so much, especially with the wear-and-tear that comes with catching.

I'm fine with seeing Swisher put right back into the starting lineup (he's at DH and batting 7th tonight), but I don't like that it's at Lonnie Chisenhall's expense. I know Jon Lester is a very good lefty, and I suppose Lonnie was due for a day off on this long road trip, but he's been the team's best hitter, making it hard to see him on the sidelines.
