MLB Draft 2014: Baseball America projects Indians to take Sean Newcomb and Derek Fisher

Baseball America has released its first mock draft of the spring, in advance of the 2014 MLB draft, which begins three weeks from today, on June 5. They've forecast the 1st round and the compensation round that takes place immediately following the 1st round, for a total of 34 picks. Like just about every mock draft you'll see during the next three weeks, this one has NC State left-hander Carlos Rodon going #1 to the Astros.

Further down are the Indians' first two picks, #21 and #31...

BA has the Indians selecting Sean Newcomb at #21. Newcomb is a junior at the University of Hartford, where has posted great numbers so far this season. In 12 starts Newcomb has pitched 79.1 innings, in which he has a 1.36 ERA, with 84 strikeouts and 33 walks. He hasn't allowed a single home run, and batters are hitting just .162 against him. He's 6'5", with a fastball that reportedly sits at 95-96 MPH, and sometimes hits 100. Newcomb would be only the second 1st-round pick ever from his school (Patrick Hedge in 1989 being the other), but he'd be hard-pressed to become the top Hartford Hawk in MLB history, as that would require unseating Jeff Bagwell.

BA has the Indians selecting Derek Fisher at #31 (no, not the Derek Fisher you hate due to his years with the Lakers). Fisher is a junior at the University of Virginia (whose top alum at the MLB level is probably Ryan Zimmerman). He's a 6'3" outfielder, expected to end up in left field, because his arm isn't strong enough for right, and his reads aren't strong enough for center. He missed the early part of the season with a broken wrist, and has a .287/.345/.436. Minor League Ball's scouting report on Fisher says he could end up with a 60 for hitting and a 65 for power, which would be very good, but also says there are a lot of questions about him.
