The Indians have acquired infielder Justin Sellers from the Dodgers this morning for cash considerations and have designated first baseman David Cooper for assignment to make room for Sellers on the 40-man roster.
The 28 year-old Sellers is coming off a 2013 season where he played in 27 games for the Dodgers. He hit just .188 in 69 at-bats with 1 HR, 2 RBI and 5 walks and 20 strikeouts. He spent most of last year at Triple-A Albuquerque where he hit .270 with 6 HR and 65 RBI, with 25 walks and 54 strikeouts in 89 games.
The versatile Sellers can play all around the diamond. In the majors, Justin has spent 50 games at shortstop, 15 at second base and 13 at third base spread over three years with the Dodgers. Los Angeles recently signed shortstop Erisbel Arruebarrena to a $25 million, five-year deal, so it's not surprising that Sellers was deemed expendable.
David Cooper still has a chance at remaining with the Indians despite being DFA'd. If he clears waivers, the club can bring him back to the team as a spring training invitee.
This seems like kind of a strange move given the depth the Tribe has at the middle infield positions.
