Indians reliever Matt Capps injures shoulder

Indians reliever Matt Capps has suffered a strained rotator cuff in his right (throwing) shoulder and will miss at least the next two weeks.

"I just kind of strained the subscapularis a little bit. We'll shut it down for a couple of weeks. It's frustrating because I was feeling really good."

Capps was a very good reliever in 2010, serving as closer for the Nationals and then the Twins that year, and recording a total of 42 saves. His production dropped off in 2011 though, and he's been plagued by shoulder injuries since the middle of 2012, causing him to pitch just one MLB innings since July of that year.

The Indians signed him a year ago, but he tossed only 7 innings (for Triple-A Columbus) before being shutdown for shoulder surgery in early June. Capps was already something of a longshot to make the 25-man roster, with 20 relievers in camp, and only one or two spots available. This setback makes it highly unlikely he wins a spot. Instead he'll hope to rehab and then prove himself in Columbus, then wait for an opportunity in Cleveland.
