Limiting the extreme shift to bring back big offense

It never occurred to me that people would call for a rule change to stop the shift, but such is the world we live in.

The Browns are back to losing, the LeBron-led Cavs are back to winning, and the rest of us are back to the weekday grind. All is just about as it should be, including your Monday edition of News & Notes:

Indians news & notes

Hey Hoynsie! tackles defensive shifts | - One of Hoynsie's always astute mailbaggers proposes some rule changes to help increase offense by limiting use of the shift. Hoynsie provides a reasoned response to what strikes me as a vaguely fascist suggestion. Click on through for more mailbag fun, and make sure to vote in today's N&N poll!

Kluber's slow and steady trek to stardom | - Jordan Bastian talks to former Padres head scout Bill Gayton, who discusses the early years of Corey Kluber, and how he knew even then that our favorite android was something special.

Bolstering an already good bullpen to build a winner | Indians Baseball Insider - In the fifth entry in IBI's ongoing series "Building a Wahoo Winner," Hayden Grove breaks down what we can expect from the Tribe 'pen as it's currently constituted. Throughout a strangely center-aligned column, though, he unfortunately doesn't make any concrete suggestions for additions.

Tribe targets: Delmon Young | Burning River Baseball - BRB suggests a fascinating low-risk, medium-reward acenario wherein the Tribe signs has-been Delmon Young in an attempt to bolster the lineup's power. He's cheap, but I personally want nothing to do with him.

News from around MLB

Tigers not closing door on Scherzer | - Everyone assumed it was a choice between Victor Martinez and Max Scherzer for the Tigers. But Dave Dombrowski and Scott Boras have hinted that there may be a chance that Max can stay in Detroit. Blech.

Market watch: middle infield | Sports On Earth - Good middle infield help is hard to find. Well, if you're not the Indians, that is. So for those other 29 teams, here are some of the top FA middle infielders to keep your eye on.

Padres the fifth team in on Sandoval | CBS Sports - Yup, a bunch of teams are vying to overpay Pablo Sandoval, but it's still probably going to be the Red Sox that "win."

Rangers will listen to offers on Andrus | Twitter (Jim Bowden) - Well, I guess the Rangers have some depth in the middle infield as well, so they're open to trading star (?) SS Elvis Andrus.

Cubs the frontrunner fro Martin | Twitter (Ken Rosenthal) - The Cubs are looking to offer Russell Martin a multi-year contract for like, a bunch of money.

Ethier likeliest LA outfield to be traded | Twitter (Buster Olney) - So say's Buster's "sources."

Twins showing interest in Masterson | Twitter (Darren Wolfson) - I wouldn't mind facing Justin Masterson five times in 2015.
