Indians News & Links 1/6: Power Vacuum

The Tribe's minor offseason moves could pay dividends, but power remains a weak point.

Jason Miller

Happy Monday, all. Here's what's going on around baseball:

Indians news

Can the Indians add a power bat? | Did The Tribe Win Last Night? (Ronnie Tellalian) - Power remains a need for the Tribe heading into 2014, and there are power options, like Nelson Cruz, available on the market. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like any of them are likely fits for the Indians. Can we find an April 2013 version of Mark Reynolds laying around somewhere?

LGFT on the HoF ballot | Did The Tribe Win Last Night? (Bob Toth) - The Indians are "quietly" represented on this year's HoF ballot. Among the cast of characters are former superstars Ron Villone and Alan Embree. I'm a bit proud of myself for even remembering those names.

Shaun Marcum is the Tribe's best offseason acquisition | It's Pronounced "Lajaway" (Joseph Werner) - Werner uses "SIERA" - skill independent ERA - to show that Marcum's 2013 stats put him in pretty good company. Here's to hoping he's this year's Scott Kazmir/Kevin Milwood.

Best Tribe draft picks throughout history | Indians Baseball Insider (Jeff Ellis) - IBI takes a look at the best Indians drafts by round for rounds 20 through 11.

Remembering Mike Hegan | The Hardball Times (Bruce Markusen) - THT with a really nice retrospective on Mike Hegan's playing career.

Around the league

Jays looking in Ubaldo Jimenez, Ervin Santana | Fox Sports (Ken Rosenthal) - Among the topics in Rosenthal's long-ish piece is a blurb on draft pick compensation and how the Blue Jays are a leading candidate to sign Jimenez since they have two protected first-round picks.

Stolen bases and cocaine | CBS Sports (Mike Axisa) - Axisa breaks down the case for Tim Raines to make the HoF. Funny that Raines' well-document cocaine use doesn't seem to damage his case as much as the allegations of PED use damage the cases of other modern stars.

Bryce Harper's life as a house | CBS Sports (Dayn Perry) - The Nationals' volcanic outfielder is looking to put on weight and get "as big as a house" for the 2014 season. Haters gonna hate, but I enjoy Harper's attitude.

Dissecting the Dodgers | Fox Sports (Ken Rosenthal) - The league's most expensive team is also one with a laundry list of issues to resolve.
