Tigers 7, Indians 0

A sellout crowd at Progressive Field watched one of the worst Tribe performances of the season. Justin Masterson, fresh off a complete game shutout in Chicago, was knocked out of the game before he finished the fifth, and the Indians were held scoreless by Rick Porcello and the Detroit bullpen.

Porcello has been roughed up by other teams, but the Indians apparently haven't figured out what the other teams have. The Detroit starter struck out six in seven innings, walking two and allowing five hits. In three starts against the Indians this year (19 innings), Porcello has allowed only three earned runs. He allowed 13 earned runs in his last two starts (Baltimore, LA Angels). And when the Indians did hit the ball hard off him, it was usually right at a Detroit fielder.

Meanwhile Masterson continued a recent trend by Indians starters by exiting before the sixth inning. Since Masterson's complete game shutout on the South Side of Chicago, the Indians bullpen has had to throw at least 3.2 innings, which has been a general trend over the last 3-4 weeks. So it's not a surprise that recently the bullpen has started to give up late runs. Joe Martinez, who is likely heading to Columbus when Carlos Carrasco is added to the roster, did help out in his last game with the Indians by go three innings and saving the rest of the bullpen for hopefully closer games over the rest of the series.

Things don't get easier for the Indians, as today's pitching matchup features the aforementioned Carlos Carrasco against Anibal Sanchez.
