MLB Draft 2013: Cleveland Indians 1st round pick Clint Frazier signs

Frazier signed for a report $3.5 million signing bonus, which is under slot value for the #5 pick.

Indians 1st round pick Clint Frazier, an 18-year-old center fielder who was recently named High School Player of the Year, has agreed to sign with the team for a bonus of 3.5 million, according to Baseball America's Jim Callis, which is below the slot value of $3,787,000 assigned to the #5 pick this year.

There was little concern that Frazier wouldn't sign, but it's nice to have it taken care of so quickly, and a pleasant surprise to see that he inked a contract for $287,000 less than slot value. That money could be put towards going over slot to land one of the team's next three picks, all of whom could choose college (3rd rounder Dace Kime and 4th rounder Kyle Crockett each have a year of eligibility left, while 5th rounder Sean Brady just finished high school), or other draftees (or might not be spent on the draft at all).

Frazier is a ways away from being ready to contribute in Cleveland (he'll play short season ball this summer and likely be assigned to A- Lake County to begin next year), but he's an exciting talent with a high ceiling, just what the Indians need to be injecting into their farm system.
