The official notice came just before game time:
#Indians place RHP Vinnie Pestano on 15-day DL (right elbow tendinitis); recall LHP Nick Hagadone.

Dennis Manoloff has the details on why the Indians reversed course:
The outlook changed, however, when Pestano failed to get through normal batting practice throwing activities this afternoon without discomfort. Pestano had appeared and sounded anything but upbeat as he prepared to partake in BP.
Because Pestano hasn't pitched since the Sunday before last, his DL stint may not necessarily be a long one; he would eligible to come off the DL on May 16th (which just happens to be an off-day). But the key is to make sure he's healthy. Pestano had Tommy John surgery while in college, but this soreness apparently has nothing to do with his UCL.
Nick Hagadone, who was sent down last week to make room for Trevor Bauer, is back before the usual 10 day wait because of the Pestano injury. He will figure to pitch important innings in Pestano's absence, particularly against left-handers. Scott Barnes is still around, so it looks like the Indians will be going with an eight-man bullpen until Michael Bourn is ready to come off the DL.
