2013 DSL Indians
Roster - Schedule - Scoreboard
Record: 25-46 (8th, Boca Chica Northwest)
The Dominican Summer League is a league in which Dominican and Venezuelan players (if the club doesn't have a VSL club) play until they are deemed ready for the US leagues. Generally the players are 16-18 years old, so it's the equivalent of a very high-level high school tournament or showcase. I believe every major-league organization has at least one DSL team, and some have two, which indicates how much talent is coming from the Dominican Republic nowadays.
The DSL is an extreme pitchers' league. There were only 45 players to have an OPS over .800, and that's quite amazing considering there are 35 teams in the league. Conversely, there were 78 pitchers to post an ERA under 3.00. So adjust your frame of reference when you look at these numbers. Also, keep in mind that the DSL Indians were one of the worst teams in the entire league, so there weren't many players that really stand out.

Yikes. Erlin Cerda had a good year, but there's a very large gap between he and the next-best hitter. You do need to keep in mind, once again, that the DSL is an extreme pitcher's league, but even if you take that into account the results are still dreadful. For reference, here's what some current Tribe prospects did in the DSL:
- Ordomar Valdez (2012) 269 PA, .284/.403/.339 (Age 18)
- Yonathan Mendoza (2012) 165 PA, .287/.401/.309 (Age 18)
- Juan Herrera (2011) 226 PA, .297/.384/.391 (Age 18)*
- Luigi Rodriguez (2010) 249 PA, .301/.403/.461 (Age 17)
- Erik Gonzalez (2010) 258 PA, .346/.384/.442 (Age 18)
- Jesus Aguilar (2009) 238 PA, .305/.412/.460 (Age 19)
- Giovanny Urshela (2009) 117 PA, .269/.316/.389 (Age 17)
- Alex Monsalve (2009) 252 PA, .274/.337/.335 (Age 17)
*Traded for Marc Rzepcynski in July 2013
In other words, I don't think anyone really jumps off the page like Jesus Aguilar or Luigi Rodriguez did. Grofi Cruz and Hector Caro are considered prospects because of their tool sets, but to this point the results haven't shown up. And that's ok, because those two are just 17 years old, or the age of your typical high school junior. Francisco Mejia skipped the DSL entirely, and he undoubtedly would have stuck out given what he did in the AZL.
Pitchers
Age | Player | Role | IP | G | ERA | H/9 | SO/9 | BB/9 |
19 | Edward Estrella | SP | 63.0 | 14 | 2.86 | 7.1 | 7.4 | 3.6 |
19 | Daniel Gomez | RP | 53.2 | 18 | 2.52 | 8.6 | 5.2 | 3.2 |
16 | Luis Araujo | SP | 49.0 | 14 | 4.04 | 9.2 | 6.6 | 4.4 |
18 | Luis Jimenez | SP | 48.0 | 16 | 5.25 | 10.7 | 5.2 | 4.9 |
18 | Jesus Ramirez | RP | 45.0 | 15 | 3.00 | 9.2 | 4.4 | 3.2 |
18 | Erick Algarin | RP | 41.0 | 13 | 2.63 | 8.6 | 7.5 | 2.6 |
19 | Francisco Lopez | SP | 39.1 | 12 | 1.83 | 7.3 | 10.8 | 4.1 |
19 | Johan Puello | RP | 38.2 | 18 | 4.42 | 9.5 | 6.8 | 4.9 |
17 | Julio Arosemana | RP | 37.2 | 17 | 3.82 | 8.1 | 5.0 | 6.2 |
I wouldn't pay too much attention to the SP or RP designation, as the typical outing for any pitcher in the DSL is at most 3 innings. And for reference, here's what some current Tribe minor-league pitchers did in the DSL:
- Luis Gomez (2012) 48.1 IP, 0.56 ERA (Age 19)
- Ramon Rodriguez (2012) 52.1 IP, 2.75 ERA (Age 18)
- Anderson Polanco (2011) 61.0 IP, 1.77 ERA (Age 18)
- Luis Lugo (2011) 29.1 IP, 3.38 ERA (Age 17)
- Enosil Tejeda (2010) 71.2 IP, 1.76 ERA (Age 21)
- Elvis Araujo (2008) 57.0 IP, 1.89 ERA (Age 16)
Again, no one sticks out, though there are some good performances, like Francisco Lopez and Edward Estrella. Still, it's pretty easy to see why this club finished 20 games under .500 (and that's hard to do with only 71 games!)
