Brooks Baseball PitchFX - Ubaldo Jimenez
Up until the bottom of the eighth, Tribe pitches had held the Tigers to 6 runs over the 25 innings of the series thus far, but Detroit would almost match their previous run total in breaking open the contest, cruising to a 7-1 victory.
Ubaldo Jimenez pitched on his best games with the Indians, though his line doesn't really reflect that. He finished with 4 earned runs allowed in 7.1 innings, but was a double play away from allowing two runs. Just like last night's starter Justin Masterson, Jimenez's runs allowed had come on one swing of the bat by Miguel Cabrera, and like Masterson, Jimenez had to that point not allowed any further damage. Jimenez was efficient with his pitches, not walking a batter until the eighth inning, and entered the eighth having thrown only 81 pitches. But his first walk of the game proved to be his undoing, for with one out, Andy Dirks mashed a ball past Casey Kotchman down the right field line, and with Comerica Park's spacious outfield, Austin Jackson scored easily, and Dirks went into third base standing up. That was it for Jimenez.
Acta brought in Cody Allen to face Cabrera with a runner on third and one out, a difficult situation, but one that Allen may be pitching in regularly as soon as next year, especially with Chris Perez's mouth making it more and more likely that he'll be dealt this winter. After a lengthy battle, including a popup that Jason Kipnis couldn't run down, Cabrera hit a deep sacrifice fly to plate Dirks and push the Detroit lead to 4-1. Then Allen hung a curve to Prince Fielder, and the Detroit first baseball muscled an opposite-field homer to push the lead to 5-1. Two more runs on a LGFT Jhonny Peralta made the rout complete.
The Indians bats were once again held in check by Doug Fister. The Indians themselves would only end up scoring 7 runs in the series, and only managed a run on four hits in the series finale. A Michael Brantley RBI single plated the first and only run of the game in the fourth inning, but Cord Phelps and Matt LaPorta would leave two runners on base. Three of the four Tribe hit occurred in this inning, and they wouldn't get a hit the rest of the game.
