Tribe Minor League Recap: August 1, 2012

The Clippers were off yesterday

Akron 5, Portland 3

Paolo Espino pitched a fine game, going 6 innings and allowing 2 runs on 4 hits. He struck out 11 Sea Dogs. I mentioned yesterday that Geovanni Soto would be consideration for a promotion to AAA in the wake of all the turmoil in the Indians rotation, but Espino has been pitching just as well. Espino has bounced between Akron and Columbus each of the past three seasons, so it's probably time to see if had handle AAA hitting over a long stretch of time.

Rob Bryson had another nice outing, pitching a scoreless two innings in relief of Espino. Bryson came from the Brewers in 2008 as part of the CC Sabathia deal, and seems ready for a promotion to Columbus.

Carolina 5, Myrtle Beach 0
Mike Rayl shut out the Pelicans over seven innings, allowing 4 hits, and Ronny Rodriguez went 2-for-3 with a double and a walk.

Lake County 7, West Michigan 2
Francisco Lindor continued his hot streak, going 3-for-5 on the night. Jose Ramirez went a perfect 4-for-4 with a triple. Ramirez was promoted to Lake County just a couple games after Mahoning Valley started their season, and he's taken off with the Captains, hitting .319/.378/.404. He's a second baseman, and it looks like the Indians have another good middle infield prospect on their hands.

Mahoning Valley 6, Vermont 1
Jacob Lee (3 IP, 1 ER), Geoffrey Davenport (4 IP, 0 ER), and Scott Peoples (2 IP, 0 ER) combined to hold the Lake Monsters to a 1 run on 5 hits. On offense, Charlie Valerio hit his 5th home run as part of a 3-for-5 night.

AZL Cubs 4, AZL Indians 0
The Indians were shut out on a six-hitter. Jorge Martinez had a double, and Nick Hamilton a triple.

AZL Cubs 7, AZL Indians 2
The Indians weren't any better in the second game of the doubleheader. Dylan Baker started, striking out 6 and allowing two runs on two hits in 3.1 innings. Breily Puerta took the loss, as he allowed three runs in relief of Baker. The Indians were held to three hits.
