The Cleveland Indians could have Roberto Hernandez, the pitcher formerly known as Fausto Carmona, back by the All-Star break, according to Paul Hoynes of The Plain Dealer. Hernandez was arrested in the Dominican Republic over the winter where he is currently residing until he can resolve his visa issues.
A visa expert that is working with Hernandez told Hoynes that "there is a good chance Roberto could be in Cleveland by the All-Star break".
Not only was it discovered over the winter that Hernandez had been using a false identity, but it turned out that the Indians right-hander was also 31 years old, not 28 as previously believed.
For this reason the Indians insisted that Hernandez renegotiate his contract this spring. Hernandez’s 2012 salary was dropped from $7 million to $2.5 million and his 2013 club option was reduced from $9 million to $6 million.
The Indians believe that this hit to Hernandez’s wallet is punishment enough, and he is not expected to be handed a suspension like Miami Marlins reliever Juan Carlos Oviedo.
