For the most part, the fan voting matched the players most deserving, with one major exception. Derek Jeter, who is hitting .260/.324/.324, was selected as the AL starter by the fans. His selection bumped off LGFT Jhonny Peralta, who's having a very nice season (.311/.359/538) for the Tigers.

Jordan Bastian has some quotes from both guys.

"It kind of picks my spirits up a little bit after the week I've had, for sure," Perez said. "I landed in Cincinnati, turned on the phone and got about 50 text messages. And I had a bunch of voicemails from my family and stuff. It was pretty exciting for sure."

"As soon as you play in the big leagues," Cabrera said, "you want to make the All-Star Game. I'm really happy right now."

Asdrubal Cabrera didn't get voted in by the fans, but as he's the lone backup at shortstop for now, he should get just as much playing time as starter Derek Jeter. Relievers, like Perez, are a different story. Managers usually hold at least a couple relievers back in case the game goes into extra innings. From an Cleveland fan's standpoint, I'd rather Perez not pitch, and be rested up for the second half.
