So don't expect a decision until late October. The decision has to happen before free agency begins, so I'm guessing that the Indians are banking on at least some negotiations before they have to decide whether to pick up the option.

At least that's what Bud Selig said yesterday. It doesn't seem adding two Wild Card teams would be a sticking point in the new CBA negotiations, though the implementation might have to be pushed back a season.

Jordan Bastian is back from covering the playoffs, and in offseason mode. The question from the title involves Carlos Santana and his positional future. Playing first base would allow Santana to be in the lineup just about every day, but that would also weaken the lineup. I still think the Indians are more likely to sign a starting left fielder than a starting first baseman, though, and Santana will again be sharing first base with someone, whether it's Matt LaPorta, Shelley Duncan, or a free agent signing.
