A couple of interesting moves in the past couple of days:
Reinstated RHP Rafael Betancourt from the 15-day Disabled List
Optioned RHP Jeremy Guthrie to Buffalo (AAA)
I'm assuming that Jeremy slots into Carmona's spot. But I'm looking a tree here, not the entire forest. The big news is that three of the four pitchers who went on the DL in the first half of April are back. Hopefully that means the bullpen will get itself back together again, but I do think there will some transitioning pains as roles are reassigned.
Optioned IF Ramon Vazquez to Buffalo (AAA)
Purchased the Contract of IF Lou Merloni from Buffalo (AAA); Recalled him to Cleveland
Merloni, Clubhouse Asset, returns to the Indians. And this time he won't be miscast as a platoon first baseman. Bench players just don't play that much under Eric Wedge, and there aren't that many obvious pinch-hitting opportunities on this club, so Merloni will probably spend most of the time in an Alvaro Espinosa role, the Designated Clubhouse Jester. Perhaps he's here to give Boone "a night off." But either way, his presence and intangibles will permeate the clubhouse, allowing the team to finally get over the hump and become a true contender.
