Transactions

Sometimes in baseball there are things we cannot explain. Like how the Indians are eleven games above .500 on the road and two games below .500 at home. And how Jeff Liefer has become this team's starting first baseman.

Well, onto some transactions, which I may have a somewhat better grasp on....

Placed LHP Arthur Rhodes on the Disabled List (knee)

Recalled RHP Jeremy Guthrie from Buffalo (AAA)

The move worked out well for the Indians, because Scott Elarton reverted back to the Colorado version last night, so after a lengthy rain delay, Guthrie got six innings in (and has been subsequently sent out).

Jeremy was, as usual, very shaky in his 2005 Indians debut. The biggest enigma in the organization, Guthrie completely lost it after a promotion to AAA in late 2003, and hasn't pitched well since. It could be a confidence issue, or like I've said before, it may be an issue with having too many pitches in your arsenal. It still remains that Guthrie isn't a major-league option at this point, and while the Indians have another option on him next year, there isn't much differentiating him from guys like Brian Tallet and Jason Stanford, so he may find himself with another organization next season.

The Indians will obviously miss Rhodes, but hopefully this gives Fernando Cabrera a chance in some high-leverage situations. You might as well see what he can do in late innings now if you envision him as a closer down the road.

Optioned RHP Jeremy Guthrie to Buffalo (AAA)

Recalled OF Jason Dubois from Buffalo (AAA)

Casey Blake left last night's game after being hit on the shoulder, so I would presume that Jason's being called up to take his place in the lineup. Blake hasn't been DLd, so this might be temporary. During his brief stint with the Bisons, Jason hit .217/.280/.607 with three homers.
