Holding Pattern

Right now, the Indians are waiting on Trevor Hoffman to make a decision. They supposedly have a three-year contract on the table, and are ready to offer Bob Wickman arbitration if Hoffman returns to San Diego.

Right now, I'm leaning towards Wickman if it's going to take three years to land Hoffman. I just don't like tying up $21-24M in a closer who will turn 40 in 2007.

UPDATE: We're out ... Hoffman is going back to San Diego, on a two-year, $13.5 million deal, plus a third year team option for $5.5 million. That option will become guaranteed if Hoffman finishes 90 games over the next two seasons or 45 games in 2007. The Indians reportedly offered the same $19 million for three years, all of it guaranteed. [Jay]

"I'm just really happy that I'm not having to traipse my family across the country, although it was a tremendous opportunity with the Cleveland Indians," Hoffman said. "In particular, the class that they showed throughout the process and the respect that they showed went above and beyond and I truly appreciate it."
